Purpose

To establish a standardized, repeatable procedure for verifying and correcting the oil level in a moulder feed works gearbox. Maintaining the correct oil level ensures adequate lubrication of the worm gear and bearings, prevents oil starvation or foaming from overfilling, and extends gearbox service life. This procedure directly reduces unplanned downtime caused by seized gearboxes, scoring, or oil breakdown from thermal stress.

Scope

This SOP applies to all feed works gearboxes on moulders in the production line, including but not limited to primary infeed, outfeed, and side-pressure gearboxes on Weinig, SCM, and Wadkin platforms. It covers the visual oil level check via sight glass or dipstick, the top-up procedure using the specified gear oil, and the documentation requirements. This procedure is performed weekly as part of the PM schedule or immediately after any oil leak repair or gearbox replacement.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the moulder at the main disconnect before removing any guards or accessing the gearbox. Verify zero energy state by attempting to start the machine after lockout is applied.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, chemical-resistant gloves, and steel-toed boots. Gear oil at operating temperature can cause thermal burns; allow the gearbox to cool if it has been running within the last 30 minutes.
  • HOTGearbox casing surfaces can exceed 60 °C during operation. Use a non-contact infrared thermometer to check surface temperature before handling. Do not open the fill port while the gearbox is pressurized or hot.
  • SPILContain any oil spills immediately using absorbent pads or granular absorbent. Report spills larger than 1 L to the shift supervisor and follow the facility's hazardous material containment protocol.

  • ISO 220 gear oil (or equivalent per manufacturer spec — verify grade on gearbox nameplate)
  • Oil funnel with fine-mesh strainer (100 µm or finer)
  • Lint-free wipes or clean rags
  • Flashlight or inspection light
  • Standard PPE (safety glasses, chemical-resistant gloves, steel-toed boots)
  • Lockout/Tagout kit with personal padlock, hasp, and tag
  • Non-contact infrared thermometer
  • Oil absorbent pads and disposal bag
  • PM logbook or digital CMMS device

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout the moulder. Shut down the machine using the normal stop sequence. Open the main electrical disconnect and apply a personal lockout device with a padlock and hasp. Attach a danger tag with your name, date, and reason for lockout. Attempt to start the machine at the operator panel to verify zero energy state.
2 Access the feed works gearbox. Remove the safety guarding and any access panels required to reach the gearbox. Use a flashlight to locate the oil sight glass (typically a transparent bullseye on the side of the gearbox) and the fill/drain ports. Allow the gearbox to cool if surface temperature exceeds 40 °C.
3 Clean the sight glass area. Wipe the sight glass and the surrounding gearbox casing with a lint-free wipe to remove dust, wood chips, oil residue, and any condensation film. A clear view of the oil meniscus is essential for an accurate reading.
4 Check the oil level. Observe the oil level through the sight glass. The oil should be at the centre of the sight glass or between the minimum and maximum marks cast into the gearbox housing. If the gearbox is equipped with a dipstick, remove it, wipe clean, reinsert fully, and then withdraw to check the level. Note the condition of the oil — it should be translucent amber. Milky or dark oil indicates contamination and requires further investigation.
5 Top up if required. If the oil level is below the minimum mark, remove the fill port plug. Insert a clean funnel with a fine-mesh strainer and add ISO 220 gear oil in small increments (approximately 100 mL at a time). Wait 30 seconds between additions to allow the oil to settle, then re-check the sight glass. Do not overfill — oil level above the maximum mark can cause foaming, overheating, and seal failure.
6 Record the reading and reinstall guarding. Log the oil level reading (e.g., "at centre of sight glass"), the quantity of oil added (if any), and the oil condition in the PM logbook or digital CMMS. Replace the fill port plug securely. Reinstall all access panels and safety guarding, ensuring all fasteners are torqued to spec. Remove the lockout/tagout, restore power, and run the moulder through one feed cycle at low speed to confirm normal operation. Check for leaks around the fill port and sight glass seals.
