Purpose

To establish a standardized and safe process for the lubrication of the sliding table carriage bearings and guide rails on a sliding table saw. Regular lubrication minimizes friction, prevents premature bearing wear, ensures accurate cuts, and reduces the risk of seizing.

Scope

Applies to all industrial sliding table saws within the facility (e.g., Altendorf, Martin, SCM, Felder) equipped with linear bearings or ball-bearing guides. This procedure covers cleaning, inspection, and lubrication of the main sliding carriage and auxiliary support bearings.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the main electrical disconnect for the saw. Verify zero energy state before proceeding. Never lubricate with the saw operational.
  • PPEWear safety glasses and nitrile gloves. Lubricant may contain hazardous chemicals; avoid prolonged skin contact.
  • CRUSHKeep hands clear of the carriage track area during manual movement of the sliding table to prevent pinch-point injuries.
Required Tools & Materials
  • White lithium grease or PTFE spray (e.g., WD-40 Specialist, Super Lube)
  • Light machine oil (ISO 32 or 68) if specified by manufacturer
  • Lint-free shop rags or microfiber cloths
  • Small brush (1-inch) or acid brush for cleaning
  • Isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher) for degreasing

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout: Isolate the saw from its energy source. Apply a personal lock and tag to the main electrical disconnect. Attempt a normal startup to verify zero energy state.
2 Access & Clean: Move the sliding table carriage to its full rear position. Using a lint-free rag and isopropyl alcohol, thoroughly clean the exposed guide rails and bearing tracks. Remove all built-up sawdust, pitch, and old grease.
3 Inspect Bearings & Rails: Visually inspect the linear bearings and hardened rails for flat spots, pitting, scoring, or excessive play. Rotate the sliding table through its full travel range, feeling for rough spots or binding. Document any abnormalities.
4 Apply Lubricant (Rails): Apply a thin, even film of white lithium grease or belt-compatible PTFE spray along the entire length of the exposed guide rails. Avoid over-application, which attracts dust.
5 Apply Lubricant (Bearing Nipples): If the bearings are equipped with Zerk fittings, attach a grease gun and apply 1-2 pumps of NLGI #2 lithium complex grease. Wipe away any purged grease immediately.
6 Cycle Carriage: Manually cycle the sliding table carriage through its full range of motion 10-15 times to distribute the lubricant evenly. The carriage should move smoothly with no hesitation.
7 Wipe Excess: Open the carriage fully again and wipe away any excess lubricant that has purged onto the rails. Leaving a thick layer of grease will attract wood dust and create a paste.
8 Record & Re-energize: Record the lubrication task in the CMMS (ServiceGrid). Remove your LOTO device, re-energize the machine, and perform a low-speed air cut to confirm normal operation before returning to production.
