Purpose

To provide a standardized, safe, and repeatable method for applying solvent‑based contact cement in industrial maintenance tasks. This procedure minimizes exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ensures proper bond strength, and prevents common application defects such as bubbles, delamination, or solvent entrapment.

Scope

This SOP applies to all personnel using solvent‑based contact cement (neoprene‑based or similar) in maintenance and repair operations. It covers substrate preparation, application technique, bond curing, and cleanup. Not applicable to water‑based contact cements or polyurethane adhesives. All operations must be performed in a designated, well‑ventilated area away from ignition sources.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout any machinery that could create sparks or heat in the vicinity. Confirm no electrical, thermal, or mechanical energy sources are active.
  • PPEWear chemical‑resistant gloves (nitrile or neoprene), safety glasses with side shields, and a NIOSH‑approved respirator with organic vapour cartridges. Use a flame‑retardant coverall if working near any potential ignition.
  • VENTWork only in an area with forced‑air ventilation or a dedicated spray booth. Maintain solvent vapour concentration below 25% of the lower explosive limit (LEL). Use a combustible gas detector if required.
  • FIRENo smoking, open flames, or spark‑producing tools within the work zone. Ground all containers and application equipment to prevent static discharge.

  • Brush (natural bristle for solvent) or short‑nap roller
  • J‑roller or hand roller for pressure application
  • Clamps or weights (if bonding large panels)
  • Respirator with organic vapour cartridges
  • Chemical‑resistant gloves (nitrile or neoprene)
  • Safety glasses with side shields
  • Flame‑retardant drop cloths
  • Manufacturer‑recommended solvent for cleanup (e.g., toluene or acetone)
  • Fire extinguisher (Class B) within 10 m

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Prepare the work area. Clear the area of combustibles. Lay down flame‑retardant drop cloths. Verify ventilation is active and all ignition sources are eliminated. Ensure a Class B fire extinguisher is within reach.
2 Don PPE. Put on nitrile gloves, safety glasses, and respirator. Confirm respirator cartridges are within expiration date and have been seal‑checked.
3 Prepare surfaces. Both bonding surfaces must be clean, dry, and free of oil, grease, dust, or old adhesive. Wipe with a clean rag and, if necessary, a degreasing solvent recommended for the substrate. Allow to dry completely.
4 Stir the cement. Open the container slowly to avoid splash. Stir the cement thoroughly in an upward‑and‑down motion until no separation or lumps remain. Do not thin with solvent unless explicitly directed by the manufacturer.
5 Apply first coat. Using a brush or roller, apply a thin, even coat of contact cement to both surfaces. Work in one direction to minimize air entrapment. Keep the coating thickness uniform — approximately 0.1–0.2 mm wet film.
6 Allow first coat to dry. Wait until the solvent evaporates sufficiently: the surface will be tacky but no cement will transfer to a dry fingertip. At 20 °C with good ventilation, this takes 15–30 minutes. Do not accelerate with heat guns (fire risk).
7 Apply second coat (if required). For maximum bond strength, apply a second thin coat to both surfaces after the first is dry to the touch. Again, allow to become tacky (typically 10–20 minutes).
8 Join the surfaces. Align the two surfaces carefully — initial contact will bond instantly. Press from the centre outward using a J‑roller or hand pressure to expel trapped air. Do not slide or shift after contact.
9 Apply pressure and allow to cure. Clamp or weight the assembly evenly. Allow a minimum of 1 hour before handling; full cure (maximum bond strength) in 24 hours. Avoid loading the joint during cure.
10 Clean up and dispose. Immediately remove excess cement from tools using manufacturer‑recommended solvent. Place solvent‑soaked rags in a sealed, fire‑resistant waste container. Dispose of empty cement containers and waste in accordance with local hazardous waste regulations.
