Vertical Bandsaw Blade Welding And Tensioning
This procedure covers the safe removal, welding, annealing, grinding, installation, and tensioning of bi‑metal or carbide‑tipped blades on industrial vertical bandsaws used in metal fabrication and primary metal processing.
The purpose of this SOP is to establish a standardized, repeatable process for welding and tensioning vertical bandsaw blades. Proper blade welding ensures joint integrity and avoids catastrophic blade breakage at high operating speeds. Correct tensioning maximizes blade life, cut accuracy, and operator safety.
This SOP applies to all vertical bandsaw machines in the facility (manual and CNC) that utilize flash‑butt or TIG blade welders. It covers blades from ½″ to 2″ in width with weld ratings up to 12,000 N. Excluded are horizontal bandsaws and slit‑coil blade joining. All maintenance personnel and setup operators must follow this procedure.
- Lockout/tagout machine main disconnect before opening blade guard or releasing tension. Verify zero energy with a meter.
- Wear ANSI Z87+ impact-rated safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4+), and hearing protection. Use a full‑face arc shield during welding.
- Welded blade ends can exceed 400 °C. Allow to air cool to <80 °C before handling. Use insulated tongs.
- Never stand in line with blade path during tensioning. A blade under 350 N/mm² can snap violently. Use proper tension gauge—never over‑tension.
- Bandsaw blade welder (flash‑butt or TIG with integral annealer)
- Cut‑off wheel / abrasive chop saw (for squaring blade ends)
- Fine abrasive grinding wheel & emery cloth (400 grit)
- Dial‑type blade tension gauge (range 0–500 N/mm²)
- Feeler gauge set (0.03–0.50 mm)
- Crow‑foot wrench for tension adjustment screw
- Lockout/tagout kit (padlock, hasp, tag)
- Personal protective equipment (as per safety section)
- Solvent degreaser & lint‑free wipes
- Replacement blade (correct length, width, tooth pitch per machine spec)
