This test validates that an industrial coating, paint, or sealant has fully cured and adheres properly to the substrate. A critical quality gate before returning equipment to service, applying topcoats, or releasing a floor to traffic.

Purpose

To verify the solvent resistance, adhesion, and complete cure of an industrial coating system after the manufacturer's recommended drying time has elapsed. This test identifies undercured coatings that would transfer, stain, or mark prematurely, leading to rework, appearance defects, or functional failure of the protective layer.

Scope

Applies to all painted surfaces, epoxy and polyurethane floor coatings, anti-corrosion primers, and industrial sealants applied to ferrous and non-ferrous substrates, concrete, or wood within maintenance and manufacturing facilities. This procedure is performed after the coating has undergone its initial drying phase and prior to placing the asset back into active service or applying subsequent coats.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the equipment if testing a coated surface on a machine or powered asset. Ensure zero energy state before accessing the test area.
  • PPEWear nitrile gloves to prevent skin oils from contaminating the test interface. Safety glasses are mandatory when handling solvents.
  • VENTEnsure adequate ventilation in the test area. Residual solvent vapours may be present. Use in a well-ventilated area or with local exhaust.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Clean, dry, lint-free white cloth (cotton rag or cheesecloth).
  • Isopropyl alcohol (99% concentration recommended) or solvent specified by the coating manufacturer's Technical Data Sheet (TDS).
  • Nitrile gloves and safety glasses.
  • Finger pressure applicator (optional, for consistent force delivery).

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Verify the coating has dried for the manufacturer's specified minimum recoat or light-service time. Refer to the TDS before starting.
2 Don clean nitrile gloves and safety glasses. Confirm the test area is clean, dry, and free of surface contaminants.
3 Select a test area that is representative of the overall cure. Avoid edges, corners, or areas directly exposed to excessive heat or drafts unless specifically required.
4 Dampen a clean white cloth with the specified solvent (or 99% isopropyl alcohol). The cloth should be moist, not saturated. Wring out any excess liquid.
5 Wrap the dampened cloth around the index finger or attach it securely to the applicator tool.
6 Firmly rub the test surface back and forth 5 to 10 times over a 1-inch (25 mm) diameter area. Use moderate, consistent pressure — approximately 1 kg (2.2 lbs) of force.
7 Immediately inspect the white cloth for any transfer of colour (staining) or visible coating residue lifting from the surface.
8 Inspect the test surface under good lighting for any dulling, softening, lifting, scratching, or marring of the coating film.
9 Record the results in the maintenance log: PASS (no visible transfer on cloth, no surface damage) or FAIL (visible transfer or surface compromised).
10 If the test fails, allow additional drying time as per the manufacturer's instructions and re-test. Do not place the asset in service until a PASS result is achieved.
