Purpose

To establish a repeatable, quantitative method for detecting stain wipe-off non-uniformity on production panels before the coating cure stage. This PM log ensures that each production run produces a visually consistent and colour-matched finish within ΔE < 2.0 of the approved standard. Early detection of streaking, blotching, or density drift prevents rework costs and reduces solvent waste from off-spec finishes. The procedure also provides traceable data for stain line recalibration and vendor batch qualification.

Scope

This procedure applies to all production finishing lines applying solvent-based or water-based wipe stains on closed-pore substrates (e.g., MDF, hardwood veneer, metal primer coat). It covers the inspection of stain application and wipe-off stations, densitometer verification, pressure block testing, and visual colour matching. This PM log is to be performed at the start of every production shift, after any stain batch change, and immediately following any line speed or applicator adjustment. It does not cover spray-applied toner uniformity or top-coat film build checks.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout: Power down and lock out any conveyor, roller, or robotic applicator sections near the inspection station before handling panels or accessing the pressure block jig. Verify zero energy state before each shift-start check.
  • PPEWear nitrile gloves at all times to prevent dermal exposure to stain solvents. Use Z87.1-rated safety glasses. If stain solvent VOC exceeds 100 g/L (verify on SDS), wear a properly fitted VOC respirator with organic vapour cartridges.
  • VENTEnsure the inspection area achieves a minimum of 4 air changes per hour. Before beginning work, verify no solvent vapour accumulation with a calibrated photoionization detector (PID). Maintain airflow away from operator breathing zone.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Pressure block test jig (spring-loaded, 5 lbf ±0.25)
  • White lint-free wiping cloths (100 % cotton, 25 × 25 cm) — minimum 6 per check
  • Digital densitometer (calibrated, 0.01 density unit resolution)
  • White ceramic calibration tile (for densitometer zeroing)
  • Stain blend reference cards (batch-matched, current production lot)
  • Stopwatch or count-up timer (resolution 0.1 s)
  • Gloves (nitrile, chemical-resistant, 6-mil minimum)
  • Safety glasses (Z87.1 rated)
  • VOC respirator with organic vapour cartridges (if stain solvents > 100 g/L)
  • Inspection lighting bar (5000 K, 2000 lux minimum at surface)
  • PM log sheet (paper or electronic) and pen
  • PID meter for pre-work vapour check

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Verify Station Conditions. Confirm lighting bar is at 5000 K, 2000 lux measured at the work surface. Ensure ambient temperature is 18–24 °C and relative humidity is 35–55 %. No cross-drafts from HVAC vents exceeding 0.5 m/s.
2 Calibrate Densitometer. Power on densitometer and perform a zero calibration on the white ceramic tile. Record offset value in the PM log. If offset exceeds ±0.03 density units, flag for service and do not proceed until calibration is verified.
3 Select Test Panels. Pull one panel from the first production run after stain application, one from mid-run, and one from the last run. Use only panels that have received the full stain application and have passed the 3-minute flash-off dwell.
4 Perform Pressure Block Wipe Test. Place the pressure block jig on the stained panel. Load the spring mechanism to 5 lbf. Slide a fresh white cloth under the block. Wipe in a single continuous stroke at 150 mm/s using a stopwatch. Remove cloth and inspect for even stain transfer across the full contact width. Repeat on each of the three test panels.
5 Measure Density at 5 Points. Using the densitometer, take readings at the four corners (25 mm from edge) and one centre point on each test panel. Record each value. Acceptable range is 0.35–0.55 density units with a maximum spread of 0.08 between any two points on the same panel.
6 Evaluate Visual Uniformity. Hold each panel at a 45° angle under the inspection light. Scan for streaks, skips, over-wipe marks, or blotchiness. Use the stain blend reference card to confirm colour match within ΔE < 2.0 (CIELAB).
7 Document and Triage. Log all readings in the PM log sheet. If any density reading falls outside range or ΔE exceeds 2.0, tag the production run for re-blending. If two consecutive runs fail, escalate to finishing supervisor and schedule a stain line recalibration.
8 Verify Corrective Action. After stain blend adjustment or line recalibration, repeat steps 3 through 6 on three fresh panels. Confirm all readings pass before releasing the line back to full production.
