Purpose

To define a repeatable end‑of‑shift shutdown and cleaning sequence for CNC routers. Proper execution removes accumulated dust, chips, and coolant residue; prevents cross‑contamination of materials; maintains accuracy of linear guides and ball screws; and documents any abnormal wear or fluid loss. Following this procedure reduces unplanned downtime and extends the service life of the spindle and motion system.

Scope

This procedure applies to all operators of industrial CNC routers (gantry‑style, moving‑table, or moving‑gantry) in production environments. It covers the end‑of‑shift shutdown of the machine, cleaning of the work envelope and tool‑changer, inspection and replenishment of way oil, and completion of the operator shift log. It does not cover deep cleaning of the vacuum table or preventive maintenance tasks beyond daily lubrication.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the machine at the main breaker before reaching into the spindle area or removing tooling. Verify zero‑energy state with a voltage tester if required by site policy.
  • PPEANSI Z87.1 safety glasses, cut‑resistant gloves (ANSI A2 or higher), and an N95 dust mask. Hearing protection is required if compressed air is used for chip blowing.
  • HOTSpindle and collet may be hot after prolonged operation. Allow 5–10 minutes cool‑down before handling. Do not attempt to blow chips off a spinning spindle.
  • CHEMOnly use approved solvents (isopropyl alcohol ≥70% or manufacturer‑recommended degreaser). Keep solvent away from electrical enclosures and avoid open flames.

  • Lockout/tagout kit (padlock, hasp, danger tag)
  • Compressed air line (80–100 psi) with anti‑static nozzle
  • HEPA‑filtered shop vacuum with brush and crevice attachments
  • Lint‑free cleaning rags (microfiber or non‑abrasive)
  • Isopropyl alcohol (≥70%) or manufacturer‑approved degreaser
  • Collet/ nut removal wrench (matching spindle taper)
  • Way oil (ISO VG 68 or per machine manual) and oil can
  • Long‑handle anti‑static brush
  • Disposable container for used rags and collected waste
  • Operator shift log (paper or digital tablet)
  • Personal protective equipment (safety glasses, cut‑resistant gloves, N95 mask, hearing protection)

Procedure: Step‑by‑Step
1 Lock out and clear work area. Press E‑stop, then apply lockout/tagout at the main disconnect. Remove any unfinished workpiece from the table and store it in the designated staging area. Scan the table for loose debris and remove large chips by hand (with gloves on).
2 Remove tool holder. Using the tool‑release button on the pendant, extract the tool holder from the spindle. Use the appropriate wrench to loosen the collet nut and remove the tool. Inspect the collet and nut for scoring or embedded debris; clean with alcohol and a rag if needed. Place tool holder in rack.
3 Blow down the machine. Start the dust extraction system. Using compressed air (nozzle pointed away from body), blow chips and dust off the gantry, linear rails, ball screw covers, cable tracks, and Z‑axis carriage. Keep nozzle 6–12 inches from surfaces. Do not blow directly into bearings or limit switches.
4 Vacuum interior and table. With the vacuum and crevice tool, remove fine dust from inside the machine enclosure, around the spindle, and from table T‑slots. Use the brush attachment on the coolant trough and splash guard. Pay attention to the chip tray – remove any accumulated sludge.
5 Wipe down surfaces. Dampen a lint‑free rag with isopropyl alcohol (do not soak) and wipe the spindle housing, Z‑axis linear guide, and tool‑changer gripper (if equipped). Wipe the exterior of the control panel and pendant. Do not spray any liquid onto the machine – only use a damp rag.
6 Check and replenish lubrication. Inspect the automatic way‑oil reservoir. If oil level is below the minimum mark, add the correct grade of way oil (ISO VG 68, or as specified). For manual‑lubrication systems, apply 3–5 drops of oil to each linear rail and the ball screw nut – refer to the machine manual for exact locations. Wipe any excess oil.
7 Home axes and power down. Release lockout from the control pendant (not main disconnect). Select “Home All” from the pendant. Wait for all axes to home and the spindle to retract to Z‑max. Power down the control unit via the software “Shutdown” button, then disconnect the main breaker. Press and hold the E‑stop button for 5 seconds to confirm zero state. Wait 30 seconds for capacitors to discharge.
8 Clean floor, dispose waste, and log. Sweep or vacuum the area around the machine. Place all used rags, gloves, and chip waste in the designated bin. Fill out the end‑of‑shift log: date, operator name, any tooling remarks, lubricant level, and any abnormal noise/vibration observed during the shift. Sign and date the log.
