Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to outline the steps required to calibrate the temperature controller on a glue pot to ensure accurate temperature readings and consistent adhesive application. Proper calibration prevents equipment damage, reduces scrap, and maintains product quality.

Scope

This procedure applies to all glue pots equipped with PID temperature controllers (e.g., Nordson, ITW Dynatec) used in packaging or woodworking departments. It covers zero‑scale offset, proportional band adjustment, and verification using a calibrated reference thermometer.

  • LOTOLockout/tagout the glue pot electrical supply before accessing controller.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 De‑energize and LOTO the glue pot electrical supply.
2 Access the temperature controller panel and remove the cover.
3 Connect the reference thermometer probe to the glue pot's temperature sensor location.
4 Re‑energize the system and allow the glue pot to reach setpoint (e.g., 150°C).
5 Compare controller reading to reference thermometer. If deviation exceeds ±2°C, adjust the offset parameter in the controller menu.
6 Repeat verification from a second setpoint (e.g., 180°C). Adjust proportional band if overshoot/undershoot is excessive.
7 Document calibration results on the PM log. Reinstall cover, remove LOTO, and return to service.
