Purpose

The purpose of this calibration check is to verify that all thickness gauges in service produce measurements that are traceable to national standards and within the required tolerance (typically ±0.001″ or ±0.025 mm). Accurate thickness measurements are critical for maintaining wall thickness in pressure vessels, pipelines, and structural components, as well as for ensuring dimensional compliance of manufactured parts.

Scope

This procedure applies to all handheld ultrasonic thickness gauges and dial thickness gauges (e.g., magnetic, mechanical) used in the facility for in-process inspection, incoming quality, and maintenance thickness surveys. It covers calibration verification only — full calibration adjustment must follow the manufacturer’s formal procedure if verification fails. All technicians performing this check must be trained on gauge operation and the contents of this SOP.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Clean the gauge probe face and all calibration standards using the lint‑free cloth. Remove any oil, grease, dirt, or coupling residue that could affect readings.
2 Power on the thickness gauge and allow it to stabilize per the manufacturer’s instructions (typically 1–2 minutes). Confirm the display is active and shows ambient temperature if applicable.
3 For ultrasonic gauges: Apply a thin, even drop of couplant to the probe face. Place the probe squarely on the zero standard (reference block of known thickness) and adjust the zero control until the display matches the block’s certified thickness. Wipe off couplant after each measurement.
4 Select three certified standards that represent low, mid, and high points of the gauge’s measurement range (e.g., 0.5 mm, 5 mm, 20 mm). Measure each standard three times and record the average reading in the calibration log.
5 Compare each average reading to the certified standard value. If any deviation exceeds the acceptable tolerance (typically ±0.001″ / ±0.025 mm or the gauge manufacturer’s specification), flag the gauge and proceed to full calibration adjustment per the manufacturer’s service manual. Do not use the gauge until it passes verification.
6 Document all results on the calibration log form (gauge ID, date, technician, standard values, readings, pass/fail). Affix a calibration sticker on the gauge body indicating the date performed, next due date, and technician initials. Return the gauge to service if it passed; otherwise quarantine it for recalibration.
