Purpose

To establish a repeatable, verifiable procedure for inspecting, cleaning, sealing, and validating the vacuum grid zones on CNC routers and flatbed cutting tables. A properly sealed grid delivers consistent hold-down force, prevents part shift during machining of small workpieces, reduces material waste, and minimizes unplanned downtime caused by vacuum loss.

Scope

This procedure applies to all CNC routers, nested-based machining centers, and flatbed cutting tables equipped with modular vacuum grid systems and used for processing small parts (defined as parts occupying less than 25% of a single zone area). It covers zone-level seal inspection, seal replacement, grid bar reinstallation, and leakage validation. This SOP does not cover vacuum pump maintenance, plenum cleaning, or electrical troubleshooting.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the vacuum pump disconnect and the main machine power breaker before any grid access. Verify zero energy with a qualified electrician.
  • PPEWear cut-resistant (ANSI A5) gloves when handling grid bars and scraping seal channels. Safety glasses with side shields are mandatory during cleaning and seal installation.
  • DUSTUse a HEPA-filtered vacuum to remove fine composite dust, wood fines, and seal debris. Do not blow debris with compressed air — airborne particulate is a respiratory hazard.
  • CHEMIsopropyl alcohol is flammable. Keep away from ignition sources. Use only in well-ventilated areas. Wear nitrile gloves when handling solvents and adhesives.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Vacuum gauge (digital or analog, ±0.1 inHg resolution)
  • Utility knife / scraper with fresh blades
  • Replacement seal strips (EPDM or silicone cord stock, manufacturer-specified durometer and cross-section)
  • Grid zone caps / vacuum port plugs (manufacturer-approved)
  • Isopropyl alcohol (99%) and lint-free rags
  • HEPA vacuum with crevice tool and brush attachment
  • Small parts hold-down test piece (solid acrylic or phenolic, 150 mm × 150 mm min.)
  • Torque wrench (if grid bars are bolted; range per manufacturer spec)
  • Marker or zone map template
  • Feeler gauge set (for measuring seal compression height)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout: Isolate electrical supply to the vacuum pump and machine controller. Lockout all energy sources and tag the disconnect. Verify zero energy before proceeding.
2 Remove Grid Bars: Unbolt or unclip the grid bars covering the zone to be serviced. Label each bar with a marker to ensure correct reinstallation orientation. Place bars on a clean surface.
3 Inspect Seals: Examine all seal channels for compression set, cuts, delamination, or contamination. Measure compression height with feeler gauges; replace if below 75% of original cross-section height.
4 Clean Channels: Scrape out old seal remnants and accumulated debris with a utility knife. Wipe channels thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol on lint-free rags. Vacuum all loose particles with a HEPA vac.
5 Install New Seals: Press fresh EPDM cord into each channel. Do not stretch the seal during installation — lay it in gently and use a blunt roller to seat it evenly to the correct height. Trim ends flush with a sharp blade.
6 Seal Interruptions: Apply a single drop of low-viscosity cyanoacrylate adhesive at butt joints where seal lengths meet. Seal around fastener holes with a thin bead of silicone to prevent vacuum bleed.
7 Replace Grid Bars: Reinstall bars in the correct orientation according to your zone map. Torque fasteners to manufacturer specification in a crisscross pattern. Do not overtighten — this can distort the seal channel.
8 Zone Block-Off: Install caps or plugs in any unused T-slots, vacuum ports, or grid openings within the zone. Use only manufacturer-approved blockers to avoid air bypass and pressure loss.
9 Leak Test: Lay a sealed test piece (solid acrylic or phenolic) over the completed zone. Turn on vacuum and measure pressure drop over a 30-second hold cycle. Acceptable: less than 2 inHg drop in 30 seconds. Mark zone as passed or failed.
10 Document: Record final pressure readings, seal batch number, technician initials, and date in the PM log. Flag any zone that fails leak test for immediate rework and schedule a re-test within 24 hours.
