Purpose

This procedure establishes the standard method to calibrate a VAV box damper actuator to within ±2° of the commanded position. Proper calibration maintains design airflow (CFM), prevents pressure drop creep, reduces reheat energy waste, and extends actuator life. This SOP applies to all 2–10 VDC and 4–20 mA analog actuators, as well as Bacnet MS/TP digital actuators in the installed base.

Scope

Applies to all VAV terminal units equipped with electric damper actuators (Belimo, Siemens, Johnson Controls, Honeywell, or equivalent). Includes single-duct, dual-duct, and fan-powered VAV boxes. Excludes pneumatic actuators; a separate SOP covers pneumatic span adjustment. All technicians performing this procedure must hold a valid HVAC mechanic or industrial instrumentation ticket and have completed the manufacturer’s actuator training module.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout the VAV box at the branch breaker panel using a hasp and group lock. Verify zero voltage with a CAT III contact tester — do not rely on breaker handle position alone.
  • PPEWear safety glasses with side shields, cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4), and a hard hat when working above ceiling tiles. Use a fiberglass ladder rated for 300 lb.
  • SHKDo not touch actuator linkage or damper shaft while the controller is powered — unexpected stroke cycles can pinch or sever fingers. Allow a 60-second capacitor discharge after power removal.
  • CEILWhen working above suspended ceilings, place a drop cloth below and ensure ceiling tiles are supported. Do not lean on T-bar grid; use a lift or ladder rated for ceiling access.
Required Tools & Materials
  • 6-in-1 screwdriver (flat + #2 Phillips, with a magnetic tip)
  • Digital manometer (±0.5% accuracy, range 0–5 in. w.g.) for airflow verification
  • Actuator calibration tool — Bacnet MSTP controller (e.g. Belimo PC-Tool) or precision analog voltmeter (0–10 VDC / 4–20 mA)
  • Insulated pliers (cushion grip, ASTM F1505) and wire strippers
  • Torque wrench (in‑lb, range 10–100 in‑lb) for re-torquing fasteners
  • Ladder — safe height rated for the VAV box access panel
  • Lockout/tagout kit (hasps, padlocks, danger tags, group lock box)
  • Calibration sticker (silver, with date / tech initials / calibration range)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout / Tagout & Safety Isolation — Perform LOTO on the VAV box electrical supply (breaker panel). Confirm zero energy with a contact voltage tester at the actuator power leads. Allow 60 seconds for capacitor discharge on the actuator circuit board.
2 Access the Actuator & Inspect Linkage — Remove the access panel (typically 4 × #8 Phillips screws). Visually inspect the damper shaft, actuator coupling, and linkage arms. Check for loose set screws, worn gear teeth, corrosion, or mechanical binding that could prevent full stroke travel.
3 Connect Calibration Tool & Power Up — Connect the calibration tool (Bacnet controller / analog voltmeter) to the actuator signal wiring per the manufacturer diagram. Re‑energize the VAV box at the breaker. Confirm 24 VAC (±10%) at the actuator power terminals using the voltmeter.
4 Zero / Span Calibration — Command 0 V (or 2‑10 V min) and adjust the zero‑point offset potentiometer until the damper blade is within +1° of the fully closed position. Then command full‑stroke voltage (10 V or 20 mA) and adjust the span potentiometer until the blade reaches the fully open position at 90° ± 1°. For digital actuators, use the software calibration wizard.
5 Stroke Verification & Repeatability — Cycle the actuator through three full open/close strokes. Record the voltage at the mechanical stop for both open and close positions. Verify that the return‑to‑zero position (closed) is within ±1° of the original setpoint. If repeatability drift exceeds 2°, inspect linkage tightness and repeat Steps 4–5.
6 Reattach Panel, Tag & Document — Reattach the access panel and torque all fasteners to manufacturer specification. Apply a silver calibration sticker with the date, your initials, and the calibrated voltage range. Log the calibrated voltage range, stroke time (full open to full close), and any linkage adjustments made in the ServiceGrid work order.
