Purpose

The purpose of this SOP is to establish a standardized method for adjusting assembly bench heights to optimize ergonomic conditions for multiple users. Proper adjustment reduces the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), improves work efficiency, and ensures consistent workstation setup across shifts.

Scope

This SOP applies to all manual‑adjust assembly benches within the manufacturing facility that are shared by two or more operators. It covers both crank‑adjustable and lever‑lock bench designs. Powered or automated height adjustment systems are covered under a separate SOP.

Safety Precautions
  • PPEWear cut‑resistant gloves to protect against pinch points during adjustment.
  • ERGODo not attempt to adjust bench while a load is on the surface. Clear all tools and materials first.
  • STABVerify bench is on a stable, level surface before unlocking height mechanism. Never exceed the manufacturer's rated load capacity during adjustment.

  • Height adjustment crank or lever (specific to bench model)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Inspect work area and clear the bench surface of all tools, materials, and debris. Verify all four bench feet are making full contact with a stable, level floor.
2 Determine the target height using the operator's elbow height. For standing workstations, measure from floor to elbow with the forearm horizontal. For seated stations, use the seated elbow height.
3 Unlock the height adjustment mechanism by disengaging the locking pin or turning the release lever. On crank‑operated benches, ensure the crank handle is fully seated into the drive socket.
4 Raise or lower the bench in small increments (≤2 cm per movement). Turn the crank clockwise to raise, counter‑clockwise to lower. For spring‑assisted benches, use the release lever while supporting the bench top.
5 Lock the adjustment mechanism completely. Use a digital level to verify the bench top is within 0.5° of horizontal. Tighten all locknuts or clamps to the manufacturer's torque specification.
6 Perform final ergonomic check: operator sits or stands at the adjusted height. Verify elbows are at 90–110° and wrists are neutral. Re‑adjust if necessary and re‑lock. Document the new height setting on the shift handover log.
