Purpose

To define the standardized method for verifying and achieving the specified torque on corner brace screws. Proper torque ensures consistent clamping force, prevents loosening under vibration, avoids thread stripping, and maintains the structural integrity of assembled frames. Scope

This SOP applies to all operators, assemblers, and maintenance personnel responsible for tightening corner brace screws on industrial equipment frames, rack systems, heavy shelving, and other structural metal assemblies where a specific torque value is required by engineering or manufacturer documentation. It covers both new installations and re-torque verification during maintenance intervals.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout: Before working on any energized equipment or near moving parts, ensure lockout/tagout is applied. Isolate all energy sources and verify zero energy state.
  • PPEPPE: Wear safety glasses with side shields and cut-resistant gloves. When using torque wrenches near edges, use hand protection to prevent pinch injuries.
  • BODYBody mechanics: Use proper lifting techniques for heavy corner braces. Keep hands clear of pinch points during assembly. Ensure stable footing before applying torque.

  • Calibrated torque wrench (beam or click type, range 5–50 N·m)
  • Socket set with correct hex or Torx driver for screw head
  • Torque marking pen or paint marker
  • Fastener thread pitch gauge (optional, for verifying bolt grade)

  • Medium-strength thread locker (if specified by engineering)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Identify fastener grade and torque specification: Refer to the equipment manual or engineering drawing to identify the corner brace screw grade (e.g., Grade 8.8 or 10.9) and the required final torque value. Record the value in N·m. If the specification is missing, consult the plant engineer.
2 Clean threads and remove old residue: Using a clean rag, wipe the screw threads and the threaded hole in the corner brace. Remove any debris, grease, or old thread locker. If reusing fasteners, inspect for thread damage and discard if worn.
3 Apply thread locker (if specified): If the engineering specification requires thread locker, apply a single 360° drop of medium-strength thread locker to the male threads of the screw. Avoid over-application to prevent hydraulic lock.
4 Set torque wrench to target value: Set the calibrated torque wrench to the specified torque value. For beam-type wrenches, align the indicator needle to the desired marking. For click-type wrenches, adjust the handle (if applicable) until the mechanism resets audibly. Verify calibration sticker is current.
5 Tighten screw in a cross-sequence pattern: Insert the screw into the corner brace hole and start threading by hand to avoid cross-threading. Using the torque wrench, tighten the screw gradually following a cross-sequence pattern if multiple screws are present (e.g., opposite corners first). Apply steady, even pressure until the wrench indicates the target torque.
6 Verify and mark final torque: After the initial torquing, re-check each screw by applying torque in the same direction without loosening. If the screw rotates before the torque wrench signals, re-tighten to specification. Once verified, draw a visible torque marking line from the screw head across to the brace surface using a paint marker. This provides visual proof of torque verification.
