Purpose

The purpose of this procedure is to define a repeatable method for locating and installing knob handles using a dedicated alignment template. Consistent handle placement is critical for product quality, customer satisfaction, and production efficiency. Using a template eliminates measurement errors, reduces cycle time, and ensures that every unit leaving the shop meets the same dimensional standard — regardless of operator experience level.

Scope

This procedure applies to all production operators, assemblers, and quality technicians involved in the installation of knob handles on cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and panel products in a woodworking, millwork, or assembly operation. It covers the use of a hard jig template with pre-drilled bushings for common centre distances (3 in, 4 in, 5 in, and metric equivalents). This SOP does not cover the use of digital layout tools or adhesive templates — those require separate work instructions.

Safety Precautions
  • PPEWear ANSI Z87.1-approved safety glasses during drilling and deburring operations. Chips and debris can eject at high speed.
  • DRILLSecure the workpiece with clamps before drilling. Never hold the workpiece by hand — a slipped drill bit can cause serious hand injuries.
  • DUSTUse a dust collection system or wear a properly fitted NIOSH-approved N95 respirator when drilling composite materials (MDF, particleboard) to avoid inhalation of fine dust.
  • EDGEDeburr holes immediately after drilling. Sharp edges on metal panels or laminates can cause lacerations. Use a deburring tool or fine-grit sandpaper.

  • Drill with appropriately sized bit (match handle screw diameter — typically #6 or #8 clearance hole)
  • Clamps (minimum 2 — quick-grip or bar clamps, padded for finished surfaces)
  • Screwdriver (flat-head or Phillips to match handle screws)
  • Handle mounting screws (verify thread pitch and length for material thickness)
  • Level (6 in or 12 in, for visual alignment check)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Prepare the workpiece. Ensure the workpiece (drawer front, cabinet door, or panel) is clean, flat, and free of debris. Verify the workpiece dimensions match the job specification. If the workpiece is part of a set, confirm it is labelled for correct position in the assembly sequence.
2 Select the correct template. Select the alignment template that matches the handle centre distance (e.g., 3 in, 4 in, 5 in, 96 mm, 128 mm). Inspect the template for worn or enlarged holes, cracks, or burrs. Do not use a damaged template — discard and replace immediately.
3 Position the template. Place the template on the workpiece at the desired handle location. Align the template's reference edges with the workpiece edges or with layout marks if previously established. For production runs, use a consistent reference — typically the top edge and the leading edge of the workpiece — to maintain uniformity across all units.
4 Clamp the template. Secure the template to the workpiece using at least two clamps — one on each side. Ensure the template does not shift during marking. For thin or delicate surfaces (e.g., veneer, laminate), use padded clamps or apply light clamping pressure to avoid indentation.
5 Mark the hole centres. Using a pencil with a sharp point or a marking awl, mark each hole centre through the template bushings. For metal or high-precision work, use a centre punch to create a dimple at each marked location. Verify that all marks are clearly visible before removing the template.
6 Remove the template and drill. Remove the clamps and template. Drill each marked centre using the bit size specified for the handle mounting screws. Drill perpendicular to the workpiece surface. For through holes, use a backup board to prevent tear-out. For blind holes, use a depth stop or tape on the bit to control depth.
7 Deburr and clean holes. Deburr each hole on both sides using a deburring tool or fine sandpaper. Remove all dust and chips with compressed air or a clean cloth. For painted or finished surfaces, inspect for chipping around the hole edges — touch up if necessary per the finish specification.
8 Install the handle. Insert the mounting screws through the handle and into the drilled holes. Tighten each screw alternately to draw the handle evenly to the surface. Torque to snug — do not over-tighten, which can strip threads, crack the workpiece, or deform the handle. Verify alignment with a level if required.
9 Inspect and document. Check that the handle is level, gap-free, and securely fastened. Visually compare with adjacent handles for consistent height and alignment. Record the installation in the production log or traveller card per job specifications. Flag any defects for rework before the unit moves to the next station.
