To determine the radial expansion rate of wooden dowels when subjected to controlled moisture conditions. This data is essential for predicting dimensional changes in assembled furniture and cabinetry, ensuring that dowel fit remains within the allowable tolerance for durable joints.
This SOP applies to all solid beech and birch dowels used in the production of case goods, cabinets, and upholstered frames. It covers dowel diameters of 8 mm, 10 mm, and 12 mm from approved suppliers. The procedure is performed during incoming inspection and after any change in raw material lot or supplier.
- Lockout/Tagout the oven before performing any maintenance. Ensure the desiccator is not cracked or damaged to avoid implosion risk.
- Wear heat-resistant gloves when handling hot glassware and dowels from the oven. Safety glasses required when cutting or marking dowels with a knife.
- Wipe up any spilled water immediately to avoid slip hazards. Keep electrical equipment away from the soaking area.
- Wooden dowels (minimum 10 per diameter class from the inspected lot)
- Digital calipers (0.01 mm resolution)
- Laboratory oven (set to 103 ± 2°C)
- Desiccator with silica gel desiccant
- Graduated cylinder (500 mL)
- Distilled water (at 20 ± 2°C)
- Lint-free cloth (microfiber)
- Data recording sheet or electronic log
Expansion (%) = ((Final diameter – Initial diameter) / Initial diameter) × 100. Calculate the mean and standard deviation for each diameter class.
