Drawer Soft Close Mechanism Engagement Speed Test

This procedure validates that soft-close drawer mechanisms engage at the correct speed (0.30–0.60 m/s) to ensure consistent closing force, prevent slamming, and avoid premature wear of the dampener piston and slide rails.

Purpose

The soft-close dampener must engage at a speed that allows the drawer to close firmly without slamming. If engagement is too slow, the drawer may remain partially open; if too fast, the impact load reduces the life of the mechanism and the cabinet box. This test provides a quantifiable pass/fail standard using a simple time‑distance measurement.

Scope

This procedure applies to all cabinet and casework assemblies using standard undermount soft-close slides with a nominal extension of 450 mm. It covers the setup, measurement method, statistical treatment of raw times, pass/fail criteria, and corrective action triggers. It does not apply to side-mount friction slides or pneumatic soft‑close systems.

Safety Precautions
  • PPEWear vinyl gloves to prevent skin oils from contaminating the slide surface. No loose clothing or jewelry while operating moving fixtures.
  • CLAMPEnsure the test assembly is securely clamped or weighted to prevent tip‑over during the release test. Use a secondary restraint if the workbench is less than 1.0 m long.
  • EYESafety glasses required when cutting or trimming marking tape with a knife. Do not place fingers in the slide path during releasing cycles.

  • Digital stopwatch with 0.01 s resolution
  • White vinyl marking tape, 12 mm width
  • Steel rule or digital calliper (300 mm measurement range)
  • LED flashlight, 400+ lumens
  • Stable workbench (minimum 1.2 m surface height)
  • Vinyl gloves
  • Clamp or weight to secure assembly
  • Data recording sheet (or digital form)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Secure the test assembly. Place the drawer assembly on the workbench with the front edge flush with the table edge. Verify the slide mechanism provides exactly 450 mm of full extension. Use clamps or a weighted block to prevent tipping.
2 Apply measurement tape. Cut two strips of white marking tape, each 20 mm long. Apply the first strip on the drawer side face exactly 50 mm from the fully open position (measured from the slide stop). Apply the second strip 350 mm from the fully open position (i.e., 300 mm from the first strip). Use a rule to centre the strips horizontally.
3 Zero the stopwatch & position. Fully extend the drawer to the mechanical stop. Use the flashlight to confirm the first tape mark is aligned with the front edge of the cabinet (fixed reference). Prepare the stopwatch with a lap‑timing function.
4 Release and measure. Hold the stopwatch in your non‑dominant hand. With the dominant hand, release the drawer from the fully extended position without applying any push or hold. Start the stopwatch the instant the first tape mark passes the cabinet edge. Stop when the second tape mark passes. Record the elapsed time to 0.01 s.
5 Repeat and average. Perform five consecutive release cycles, waiting at least 5 seconds between cycles to let the dampener stabilise. Discard the fastest and slowest times. Average the remaining three measurements.
6 Calculate speed and decide. Speed (m/s) = 0.300 m ÷ average time (s). Acceptable range: 0.30–0.60 m/s. If below 0.30 m/s, the slide engages too slowly — check for binding or worn dampener. If above 0.60 m/s, the slide slams — adjust the dampener preload or replace the mechanism. Record the result and any corrective action taken on the work order.
