Purpose

To provide a standardized method for operators to quickly verify component alignment using a finger pull test. This procedure reduces variability in assembly, prevents rework, and supports 5S and lean manufacturing principles by making alignment checks consistent and measurable.

Scope

This SOP applies to all assembly, sub‑assembly, and fixture stations where a finger pull alignment check is part of the standard work instruction (SWI). It covers both manual and semi‑automated operations. All production operators, team leads, and quality inspectors are responsible for following this procedure.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout: Before performing any alignment check on a station with moving parts, ensure all energy sources are isolated and locked out per your facility's LOTO procedure.
  • PPEPPE: Wear cut‑resistant gloves and safety glasses at all times. Components may have sharp edges or burrs. Avoid loose clothing that could snag.
  • ERGOErgonomics: Use proper lifting techniques when handling heavy or awkward parts. Do not force a pull — if resistance is unexpected, stop and investigate.

  • Calibrated feeler gauge set (metric, 0.05–1.00 mm typical)
  • Metric ruler or digital caliper
  • Torque wrench (if adjustment requires fasteners)
  • Alignment jig or fixture (as per product specification)
  • Inspection log sheet (paper or digital)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Preparation: Review the standard work instruction for the specific station. Gather all required tools and verify they are within calibration date.
2 Safety Lockout: If the station involves moving components, perform lockout/tagout per facility procedure before reaching into the work area.
3 Clean Surfaces: Wipe down the reference surfaces and finger pull points using a clean, lint‑free cloth to remove debris, coolant, or oil.
4 Identify Reference Points: Locate the designated finger pull points as shown on the station diagram or SWI. These are typically marked with a small dot or arrow.
5 Perform Finger Pull: Using your index finger, apply a steady, light (approx. 5N) pressure at the specified pull point. Observe if the component moves or if a gap appears between mating surfaces.
6 Measure Deviation: If movement or a gap is detected, insert the appropriate feeler gauge at the finger pull location. Read and record the gap size. If no movement, note “0.00 mm” in the log.
7 Adjust Alignment: If the measured gap exceeds the allowable tolerance (see SWI for limit), loosen the fasteners, reposition the component, and retighten to the specified torque. Re‑check with finger pull.
8 Final Verification: Perform the finger pull test once more to confirm alignment is within spec. No movement or gap should be felt.
9 Document: Sign and date the inspection log sheet. Record any adjustments made and the final gap measurement. Initial the standard work sheet at the station.
10 Clean Up: Return all tools to their designated storage locations. Wipe down the station surface. Report any anomalies (e.g., recurring misalignment, damaged components) to the shift lead.
