Flip Up Door Stay Gas Spring Force Check

This procedure defines how to measure and adjust the extension force of gas springs used on flip-up doors in industrial cabinets, machinery enclosures, and storage systems. Proper force ensures safe, predictable door behaviour and prevents damage or injury from unexpected slam or excessive lift assist.

Purpose

Gas springs degrade over time; a force check at regular intervals (every 6 months or 10,000 cycles) confirms the door stay still meets manufacturer’s specification. An out‑of‑spec spring can cause the door to drift open, slam shut, or require excessive effort to operate. This SOP standardizes the verification method and adjustment procedure to maintain consistent door performance across the fleet.

Scope

Applies to all flip-up doors equipped with single‑action gas springs rated between 50 N and 400 N. Covers automotive‑style hinged access panels, RV storage doors, industrial electrical cabinets, and similar equipment. Excluded: Heavy‑duty hydraulic dampers, multi‑spring systems, and doors that require full counterweight calculation. This SOP is intended for trained maintenance technicians or lean manufacturing leads.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout any drive system that could move the door automatically. If the door is part of a machine, de‑energize and install a physical support prop before touching the gas spring.
  • PPEWear safety glasses and cut‑resistant gloves. Gas springs contain compressed nitrogen – a ruptured rod can eject debris and cause eye injury.
  • HANDNever place fingers between the door panel and the cabinet frame during measurement. Use the force gauge at arm’s length with the door propped open to 90°.
  • PINCHBe aware of pinch points at the hinge and bracket ends. Do not exceed the spring manufacturer’s maximum adjustment turn (usually ½ turn total).

  • Digital Force Gauge (0–500 N range, ±0.5% accuracy) with peak‑hold function
  • Adjustable Spanner Wrench (for threaded end cap adjustment, size per spring spec)
  • Safety Glasses (ANSI Z87.1)
  • Marking Pen (non‑permanent, for marking measurement points)
  • Work Gloves (cut‑resistant, EN 388 level 4)
  • Door Support Prop (rated for door weight)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Engage door lockout/tagout (LOTO) and confirm door is mechanically supported so it cannot drop if gas spring fails. Install a rated prop under the door panel.
2 Remove any cosmetic covers or trim that obstruct access to the gas spring mounting brackets. Note the position of rod end and cylinder end.
3 Zero the digital force gauge. Attach the gauge hook to a stiff loop around the gas spring rod (not the cylinder). Align the gauge with the axis of the rod, pull slowly until the piston just begins to extend. Record the peak force in newtons. This is the initial extension force.
4 Repeat the measurement at two additional door angles: 45° (half‑open) and 90° (full extension). Use a protractor or digital angle gauge to verify. Record all three readings on the checklist.
5 Compare the readings against the manufacturer’s specification (typical tolerance ±15%). If any reading falls outside this range, the gas spring requires adjustment or replacement. Do not attempt adjustments beyond ½ total turn.
6 If adjustment is permitted, use the spanner to turn the threaded end cap clockwise to increase force, counter‑clockwise to decrease. Turn ¼ turn max per trial, then re‑measure. Repeat until all three readings are within spec.
7 Document the final force values, number of adjustment turns, and technician ID on the SOP checklist. Reinstall all covers and trim. Remove the support prop. Cycle the door three full times to verify smooth, balanced motion without binding or drift.
