Purpose

The purpose of this SOP is to define a repeatable, safe method for verifying and restoring smooth rotation of Lazy Susan bearing assemblies. Consistent bearing performance eliminates ergonomic strain from sticking rotations, reduces component wear, and supports lean 5S principles by ensuring every stored item is within easy reach. This procedure is critical in assembly, packaging, and kitchen cabinetry applications where rotational friction directly impacts throughput and operator safety.

Scope

This procedure applies to all Lazy Susan assemblies used in stationary cabinets, mobile workstations, and industrial carousel racks within the facility. It covers single-axis rotation bearings (both ball‑bearing and sleeve‑type) carrying static loads up to 200 kg. Operators, maintenance technicians, and assembly line workers must follow this SOP. Excluded are powered rotary indexing tables and bearings requiring certified lubrication intervals per manufacturer specifications.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOIf the Lazy Susan is part of a powered carousel or automated guided vehicle (AGV) system, perform Lockout/Tagout per facility energy control procedure. Verify zero energy before any disassembly.
  • PPEWear safety glasses (ANSI Z87.1) to protect from grease splatter and debris. Cut‑resistant gloves (ANSI A3 minimum) when handling sheet metal edges or bearing races. Steel‑toed boots required if unit weighs > 25 kg.
  • LIFTUse appropriate mechanical assistance (hoist, second person) for assemblies exceeding 15 kg. Do not rely on the bearing to support you – the rotating platform is not a step ladder.
  • CHEMGrease and cleaning solvents may cause skin irritation. Use nitrile gloves and ensure adequate ventilation. Dispose of contaminated rags in approved waste containers.

  • Spirit level (200 mm, sensitivity 0.5 mm/m)
  • Permanent marker (fine tip)
  • Shim stock set (0.1–1.0 mm brass or stainless steel)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Inspect Bearing System. Rotate the Lazy Susan by hand through at least three full revolutions. Note any binding, rough spots, or audible grinding. Place a level on the platform; record out‑of‑level in mm/m. Visually check for visible damage, corrosion, or loose fasteners. Use a marker to index the platform edge to the base for reference.
2 Disassemble Bearing Assembly. Remove all retaining bolts using the appropriate hex key. Lift the rotating platform straight up and set aside on a clean, padded surface. Remove the bearing race from the base, noting orientation (if asymmetric). Keep all hardware grouped by location.
3 Clean and Inspect Components. Wipe grease and debris from bearing race, balls, and raceways. Inspect for pitting, flat spots, or cracking using digital caliper to measure any deformation (race diameter tolerance ±0.25 mm from manufacturer spec). Check ball retainers for distortion. Replace worn or damaged bearings per facility replenishment policy.
4 Apply Lubricant. Apply a thin, continuous bead of lithium grease (approximately 2 g per 100 mm race diameter) to the inner raceway. Manually rotate the race through one full revolution to distribute grease. Wipe away any excess that extrudes from the seal area. Avoid over‑greasing – reduces drag and prevents seal blowout.
5 Reassemble Assembly. Seat the rotating platform onto the greased bearing race. Install and hand‑tighten all bolts. Then torque each bolt to 2.5 N·m (or per manufacturer spec) in a star pattern, incrementally, to ensure even preload. Recheck that platform spins freely without binding.
6 Verify Rotation Smoothness. Rotate the platform through three complete cycles at moderate speed. No binding, or scraping. Place the spirit level at three different positions (0°, 120°, 240°). Maximum tilt: 0.5 mm/m. If exceeded, insert shim stock under low side of base.
7 Final Check and Documentation. Perform a concentricity check: mark a fixed point on the platform edge and rotate; radial runout must be ≤ 1.5 mm. If ok, remove index mark. Record completion in maintenance log (date, bearing condition, grease used, final torque). Sign and date the SOP checklist.
