Purpose

Define the acceptable gap range for through dovetail joints on drawer boxes and provide a repeatable inspection process. Consistent joint gap control prevents racking, glue-starved joints, and visual rejects while maintaining assembly throughput. This SOP aligns with the shop’s lean quality-at-source standard.

Scope

Applies to all drawer subassemblies produced on the CNC dovetail machine (Model DTC-300) and the manual dovetail jig (OmniJig Pro). Covers gap measurement at the pin/tail interface on all four corners of the drawer box. Does not cover half-blind dovetails or sliding dovetails. Operators, setup technicians, and quality inspectors must follow this procedure before applying glue or assembly pressure.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the dovetail machine before cleaning or adjusting templates. Verify zero energy state.
  • PPEWear cut-resistant gloves when handling sharp steel rule dies or deburring tools. Safety glasses required during inspection of machined dovetails to prevent metal chip exposure.
  • DUSTUse MERV-14 vacuum capture during any secondary sanding or deburring operations. Do not blow chips with compressed air without HEPA extraction.

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Clamp drawer subassembly securely in a bench vise with protective jaws, positioning one corner joint face‑up. Do not over‑tighten — avoid distorting the joint.
2 Insert feeler gauge into the gap between pin and tail at mid‑joint. Select the blade that exactly fills the gap without force. Record thickness in the inspection log.
3 Measure gap depth with digital caliper at three locations: top, middle, bottom of the joint face. Record the largest value. Repeat for all four corners.
4 Compare against tolerance table: 0.004″–0.008″ for softwood (poplar, pine), 0.003″–0.006″ for hardwood (maple, oak, cherry). Any reading outside this range triggers corrective action.
5 If out of tolerance, identify root cause: check cutter sharpness, template wear, chip‑out, or manual jig misalignment. Adjust per corrective actions list (e.g., replace template, increase climb‑milling speed).
6 Re‑measure after adjustment. Document final reading on the ShopDocs record or paper checklist. Stamp approval if all corners pass. Proceed to glue‑up within 4 hours of measurement.
