Purpose

The purpose of this standard operating procedure is to provide a consistent method for fine-tuning the damping sensitivity of soft-close hinges. Proper adjustment prevents damage to cabinet doors, extends hinge life, and ensures a professional, uniform finish across all installations.

Scope

This procedure applies to all standard soft-close hinges with adjustable dampers, including concealed and surface-mount types. It is intended for use in cabinetry assembly, installation, and service environments where consistent closing performance is required.

Safety Precautions

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Identify the adjustment port on the hinge arm — typically a small hexagonal hole or slotted screw clearly marked with + and – symbols for damping direction.
2 Select the correct hex key (usually 5/32″ or 4mm) and insert it fully into the port. If a screwdriver is required, use a properly fitting flathead.
3 Turn the adjustment screw clockwise in quarter‑turn increments to increase damping (faster closure) or counterclockwise to decrease damping (slower closure). Test after each adjustment by gently closing the door.
4 If the hinge has a second adjustment port for final latch speed, refer to the manufacturer’s markings. Repeat the same incremental method for both ports if needed.
5 Perform the same adjustment on every hinge attached to the door to ensure uniform closing speed and force. Proceed one hinge at a time and recheck overall door alignment.
6 Wipe any dust, grease, or residue from the hinge area with a clean, dry cloth. The door should now close smoothly with consistent damping.
