Purpose

To perform a standardized load test on wall hung cabinet brackets to confirm compliance with the rated working load limit (WLL) and to detect any structural defects before cabinet mounting. This SOP minimizes risk of bracket failure, cabinet damage, and personal injury.

Scope

Applies to all wall hung cabinet brackets used in commercial and residential millwork installations. Covers brackets manufactured from steel, aluminum, or engineered composites with a rated WLL between 50 kg and 300 kg. Does not cover dynamic load testing or seismic qualification tests.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout - Ensure no live electrical wiring is near the load test area. Isolate any power tools used for bracket installation.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, steel-toed boots, and cut-resistant gloves. Use hard hat when working under suspended loads.
  • LOADNever stand directly under the test weight. Use a load spreader bar if necessary. Keep a clear zone of 2 m radius during loading.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Calibrated test weights (50 kg increments, up to 1.5× WLL)
  • Digital force gauge or load cell (accurate to ±0.5%)
  • Torque wrench (range per bracket manufacturer spec)
  • Magnetic level (600 mm / 24 in)
  • Measuring tape (metric and imperial)
  • Notebook or digital data sheet for recording results
  • Bracket identification label and permanent marker

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Pre-test Inspection & Setup – Visually inspect brackets for cracks, deformation, or missing fasteners. Verify bracket model matches the approved engineering drawing. Clean mounting surfaces. Ensure wall anchors are torqued to manufacturer specification using a calibrated torque wrench.
2 Zero-out Measurement Instruments – Place the level on the bracket mounting plate and adjust until perfectly horizontal. Zero the digital force gauge. If using a load cell, confirm it is aligned vertically with the load attachment point.
3 Apply Vertical Test Load – Hang test weights from the bracket’s load attachment point at a slow, controlled rate. Increase in increments of 50 kg until reaching 1.5× the rated working load limit (or as specified by engineering). Maintain maximum load for 60 seconds.
4 Measure Deflection & Record Data – Using the level and measuring tape, record any vertical deflection at the load point. Note elastic recovery after load removal. Check for permanent deformation, cracking, or fastener loosening. Record all values on the data sheet.
5 Post-test Inspection & Sign-off – Remove all weights. Re-inspect brackets for cracks, bending, or anchor pull-out. If deflection exceeds 0.1% of span or if any damage is present, fail the bracket and tag for replacement. Complete the load test report and attach identification labels to passed brackets.
