Purpose

To confirm that the melamine surface coating adheres properly and resists scratching under normal handling and installation conditions. This test prevents premature panel replacement, reduces warranty claims, and maintains brand reputation for high-quality flat-pack components.

Scope

This procedure applies to all melamine-faced particleboard or MDF panels produced in the facility. It is performed by trained quality inspectors on a per-lot basis (minimum one sample per production run) and whenever a new supplier lot of raw board is introduced.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/tagout any automated handling equipment near the test area before preparing samples.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, and a dust mask when cutting or handling melamine panels to protect against sharp edges and airborne particles.
  • CHEMIsopropyl alcohol is flammable. Keep away from ignition sources and use in a well-ventilated area.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Scratch test tool (e.g., Taber 710 or equivalent tungsten carbide tip)
  • Calibrated weights: 500 g and 1000 g
  • Magnifying lens (10× minimum) or digital measuring microscope
  • Melamine panel sample (100 mm × 100 mm minimum, clean, no visible defects)
  • Lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol (99%)
  • Inspection light source (LED gooseneck lamp, 3000–4000 lux)
  • Data recording form or digital quality log

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Clean the melamine test surface with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free cloth. Allow the surface to dry completely (approx. 30 seconds).
2 Mount the scratch test tool according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Select the standard load — typically 500 g for light-duty panels or 1000 g for heavy-duty panels; refer to the product specification sheet.
3 Place the sample on a flat, rigid, non-slip surface. Verify that the tool tip is perpendicular (90°) to the panel surface using a small machinist’s square.
4 Lower the tip gently onto the panel surface at the starting point (minimum 10 mm from any edge). Activate the traversing mechanism to draw a single continuous scratch at a constant speed (approx. 50 mm/min) for a length of at least 50 mm.
5 Raise the tip and inspect the scratch mark under 10× magnification. Illuminate with the inspection light at a 45° angle. Look for substrate exposure (white line indicating bare board) or delamination of the melamine layer.
6 Record the maximum scratch width to the nearest 0.1 mm using a reticle or digital microscope. Note any substrate exposure. Compare against acceptance criteria: typically ≤0.5 mm scratch width and no substrate exposure for panels rated as “heavy duty.”
7 Clean the tool tip with a soft cloth after each test. Document all results in the production quality log. If the panel fails (exceeds scratch width or exposes substrate), immediately notify the shift supervisor and quarantine the affected lot.
