Purpose

Establish a repeatable, documented inspection process for cargo securement and load binding on flatbed trailers. The goal is to eliminate load shift during transit, meet regulatory requirements (FMCSA §393.100–136, CSA D617), and protect personnel from injuries caused by unrestrained loads.

Scope

This SOP applies to all flatbed trailers operated within the fleet, covering composite, steel, and aluminum deck trailers. It includes initial tie-down, intermediate re-check, and final inspection before departure. Excluded: enclosed van trailers, container chassis, and vehicles carrying hazardous materials in bulk.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLock out trailer air brake system before performing any hands-on tensioning if trailer is coupled to a live truck. Use wheel chocks on both sides of at least one axle.
  • PPEWear ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses, puncture-resistant gloves with cut level 4, and steel-toe boots meeting ASTM F2413. High-visibility vest required when working near active traffic lanes.
  • CRUSHNever place any body part between load and trailer side rail while tensioning. Maintain a minimum clearance of 500 mm from any moving cargo.
  • FALLUse a three-point stance when climbing onto the trailer deck. Do not walk on top of unstable cargo. Aerial work platform required for loads over 2.5 m height.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Nylon ratchet straps (working load limit per strap: 2,270 kg / 5,000 lb) — variable lengths
  • Steel load binders (lever-type or ratchet-type, rated 5,400 kg / 12,000 lb)
  • Edge protectors / corner guards (rubber or ABS plastic, minimum 150 mm length)
  • Torque wrench capable of 70–100 N·m (for bolt-on track anchors)
  • Load securement manual / working load limit chart (specific to strap model)
  • Inspection checklist (paper or digital), flashlight, marker/chalk
  • Personal protective equipment as listed under Safety Precautions

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Prepare vehicle — Park on firm, level surface. Apply parking brake and chock wheels. Place warning triangles 30 m behind trailer if on a public roadway. Disconnect trailer air brakes only after chocks are set.
2 Inspect tie-down points — Examine all D-rings, stake pockets, rub rails, and welded anchor points. Reject any with deformation >10% of original shape, cracks, excessive rust pitting, or missing bolts. Record defects on checklist.
3 Position and protect load — Verify load is centered, evenly distributed, and within gross axle weight rating. Install edge protectors on all sharp corners where straps or chains contact cargo. Minimum 150 mm length, positioned directly at the contact point.
4 Attach and route straps/binders — For aggregate/pipe loads use rigid sideboards. Attach tensioners to fixed anchor points. Route straps over the load at a maximum angle of 45° from vertical. Use a minimum of 4 straps for any load over 907 kg (2,000 lb). For longer loads add one strap per 3 linear metres.
5 Tension evenly — For ratchet straps: pull webbing through the ratchet until hand-tight, then pump the handle to achieve a firm tension — do not exceed the working load limit. For lever binders: use a smooth, controlled motion; never use a cheater bar or pipe extension. Tension all straps to the same approximate force.
6 Verify angles and slack — Measure the horizontal angle of each strap. If any strap exceeds 45° from vertical, re-route it to a lower anchor point. Reach straps must not sag more than 25 mm when lightly pushed. All tensioners must be in the locked position with no visible slack.
7 Final walk-around and sign-off — Perform a full perimeter walk. Tug each strap firmly, check for load displacement, ensure edge protectors haven't shifted. Verify no loose or dangling strap tails longer than 150 mm. Complete inspection checklist and sign driver/operator logs. Stow all tools and remove chocks before departure.
