Purpose

Ensure all fleet vehicles maintain clear driver visibility under all weather conditions. This procedure standardizes wiper blade replacement, washer fluid concentration, and nozzle alignment to prevent streaking, freezing, and motor overload. Regular maintenance extends wiper system life and reduces emergency roadside failures.

Scope

This SOP applies to all light- and medium-duty fleet vehicles (Class 1–6) operated within the fleet. It covers conventional windshield wiper systems with electric motors and pump-fed washer nozzles. It does not cover heavy trucks with air-operated wiper systems, heated glass, or aftermarket programmable controllers—those require manufacturer-specific procedures.

Safety Precautions
  • ELECTurn ignition to ACCESSORY position only. Do not start engine. Disconnect battery negative terminal if performing any electrical repair (pump or motor replacement).
  • PINCHWiper arms are spring-loaded. Always support the arm with one hand while releasing blade; never let the arm snap back onto the glass.
  • PPEWear safety glasses when handling washer fluid concentrate, cleaning nozzles, or working near the windshield. Use nitrile gloves if skin contact with coolant is possible.
  • LOTOFor fleet vehicles undergoing scheduled maintenance, apply a "Do Not Operate" tag on the steering wheel and log the vehicle out in the fleet management system until the procedure is completed and documented.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Silicone beam wiper blades (size per vehicle spec – common: 24" driver, 18" passenger for pickup; 21" for cargo van)
  • Windshield washer fluid concentrate (rated to at least –40°C)
  • Distilled water (for mixing concentrate)
  • Funnel and measuring container (500 mL or 1 L)
  • Flathead screwdriver (small – for nozzle adjustment)
  • Rags or shop towels
  • Protective gloves and safety glasses
  • Vehicle key (or access to ignition)
  • Wheel chocks (2)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Prepare Vehicle – Park on level ground, engage parking brake, and chock rear wheels. Insert key and turn to ACC (accessory) position. Do not start engine. Confirm windshield is clean and dry for accurate blade testing.
2 Inspect Existing Wiper Blades – Activate wipers on all speeds: low, high, and intermittent. Observe for streaking, chattering, or skipped areas. With wipers off, lift each arm and inspect rubber edge for cracks, hardening, or uneven wear. Note the date code if printed. Replace if rubber is >6 months old or shows any defect.
3 Replace Wiper Blades – Gently pull wiper arm away from glass. Press the release tab (or lift lock) and slide the old blade off the hook. Clean the arm hook with a rag. Attach new silicone beam blade of the correct length. Push until you hear a click. Lower the arm carefully onto glass. Repeat for all wiper positions (front, rear if equipped).
4 Check Washer Fluid Level and Concentration – Locate the translucent washer reservoir. If the fluid is below the MIN mark, mix concentrate with distilled water per manufacturer ratio (typically 1:1 for winter). Use funnel to fill to MAX. Avoid mixing different fluid types. Record fluid type in maintenance log.
5 Inspect and Clear Washer Nozzles – Operate washer pump for about 3 seconds. The spray pattern should be a uniform fan covering the upper two-thirds of the windshield. If the pattern is uneven or clogged, use a pin to clear the nozzle orifice. For adjustable nozzles, realign using a flathead screwdriver. Replace nozzles if cracked or fully blocked.
6 Test Complete System – Run wipers on all speeds while spraying washer fluid. Check for smooth, chatter-free movement across the full sweep. Verify that the intermittent delay works correctly. If the wipers skip or leave a thin film, clean the windshield with a glass stripper and inspect blade tension. Listen for unusual motor noise or pump hum – any anomalies must be documented and flagged for repair.
7 Document and Report – In the fleet management system, enter: vehicle unit number, date, technician name, part numbers of blades installed, washer fluid type/concentration, and any issues noted (e.g., nozzle replacement, motor noise). If electrical faults were discovered (non-operating pump, intermittent wiper motor), lock out the vehicle and open a work order for electrical diagnostics.
