Purpose

Establish a repeatable pre-installation protocol to prevent damage to finished surfaces — including polished concrete, hardwood, drywall, and commercial door assemblies — during equipment delivery and positioning. Eliminates costly post-installation touch-ups and maintains client site conditions.

Scope

This SOP applies to all field installation teams moving equipment weighing over 45 kg through finished commercial or residential interiors. Covers all protection material selection, placement methodology, and final verification walk-through before any machinery enters the building envelope.

Safety Precautions
  • SLIPPolyethylene sheeting creates a slick surface when wet. All personnel must wear slip-resistant footwear with minimum COF rating of 0.5 when walking on protected floors.
  • LIFTRolled protection materials (plywood, Masonite, rubber ramps) are heavy. Use mechanical assist or two-person lift for any bundle exceeding 30 kg. Keep fingers clear of pinch points when unrolling.
  • TRIPTape down all ramp edges and seam overlaps. No ramp height variance more than 12 mm. Tag any tripping hazard greater than 6 mm with high-visibility tape.
Required Tools & Materials
  • 6 mil polyethylene sheeting (roll, min 10 ft wide for corridors)
  • 3/8 in CDX plywood sheets (4×8 ft) for heavy rolling equipment paths
  • 4 ft × 8 ft corrugated plastic panels (coroplast) or 1/4 in Masonite for wall protection
  • 1/2 in rubber threshold ramps (pre-beveled, 4 ft lengths)
  • Adhesive-backed foam edge guards for door frames (2 in × 100 ft roll)
  • Duct tape (2 in wide, heavy-duty) for seaming floor covers
  • 3M blue painter’s tape (2 in wide, 14-day clean removal) for wall panels
  • Temporary door protection film (48 in × 200 ft roll, UV-stable)
  • Utility knife with hook blade, measuring tape (25 ft), marker, digital camera or smartphone for photo documentation

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Review delivery route and install zone. Walk the entire path the equipment will travel and the final installation footprint. Mark all doorways, hallways, corners, and areas where the floor or wall finish could be damaged. Note any existing finish damage — photograph and flag before applying protection.
2 Select and lay floor protection. Use 6 mil polyethylene sheeting for dry, low-traffic routes or wet areas where mud may be tracked. Use 3/8 in plywood for any route requiring dollies, pallet jacks, or powered lifts. Overlap sheets by 12 in (300 mm) in the direction of travel. Tape all seams on the underside. Extend protection 2 ft beyond the equipment path on each side.
3 Install wall protection. Cut coroplast or Masonite panels to cover walls to a height of 48 in (1220 mm) along the travel route. Attach with painter’s tape at 12 in intervals — never use duct tape on painted walls. Overlap panels by 2 in at vertical seams. Wrap panel edges 2 in around inside and outside corners.
4 Protect doorways and thresholds. Place rubber threshold ramps over all door saddles — bevel facing the equipment travel direction. Wrap door frames with adhesive-backed foam edge guards. Apply temporary door protection film to glass panels. Verify each door opens fully (min 90°) after protection is applied; adjust ramps or guards if binding occurs.
5 Conduct walk-through verification. Walk the entire route again with a second crew member. Confirm no bare finish surface remains exposed in the travel path. Both crew members must sign the digital checklist before any equipment crosses the threshold.
