Provide a standardized, repeatable process for inspecting and lubricating the hydraulic cylinder that powers a loading dock leveler. Monthly execution minimises unplanned downtime, prevents hydraulic fluid leaks, and ensures the leveler operates smoothly under heavy loads. Adherence to this SOP supports regulatory compliance and extends the service life of the equipment.
This procedure applies to all hydraulic dock levelers in use at distribution centres, warehouses, and loading docks that employ a single‑ or double‑acting hydraulic cylinder as the primary lifting mechanism. It does not cover levelers with pneumatic or fully electric actuators. All maintenance personnel conducting this task must be trained in lockout/tagout and basic hydraulic safety.
- Lock out / tag out the dock leveler electrical panel before any work. Verify zero energy state with a non‑contact voltage tester.
- Wear CSA‑approved safety glasses, cut‑resistant gloves, and steel‑toed boots. Use a face shield when working near pressurised hydraulic lines.
- Barricade the dock area with cones and warning signs. Ensure no fork trucks or vehicles approach during inspection.
- Hydraulic fluid can be hot and under pressure. Relieve system pressure by cycling the leveler before servicing. Clean up spills immediately with absorbent material.
- Hydraulic jack or mechanical support stand (for raising and holding leveler)
- Lint‑free rags and shop towels
- Approved hydraulic fluid – ISO 32 (check manufacturer spec)
- Grease gun loaded with NLGI #2 lithium grease
- Torque wrench (range 10–50 ft‑lb)
- Inspection flashlight and mirror
