Material Overview & Common Uses

1.5% lanthanated tungsten electrodes (ISO 6848 classification WL15, AWS A5.12 classification EWLa-1.5) are a non-radioactive, rare-earth-doped tungsten alloy used primarily for AC and DC TIG welding of carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, magnesium, titanium, nickel alloys, and copper alloys. The gold band color code distinguishes them from pure tungsten (green), 2% thoriated (red), and 2% ceriated (grey). They offer superior arc starting stability, lower electrode erosion, and longer life compared to pure tungsten, especially on AC welding of aluminum. Common in Canadian fabrication shops for structural steel, pipe welding, aerospace, and automotive repair. Available in standard lengths of 175 mm (7 inches) and 150 mm (6 inches), with diameters from 0.5 mm (0.020 in) to 6.4 mm (1/4 in).

Machinability, Tooling & Feeds

1.5% lanthanated tungsten is machinable by grinding only. Do not attempt to cut or shape with conventional metal cutting tools (e.g., hacksaw, bandsaw) as tungsten is extremely hard and brittle at room temperature. Use a dedicated tungsten grinder or a fine-grit diamond wheel (e.g., 200–400 grit) for point shaping. Grind longitudinally (parallel to the electrode axis) to avoid circumferential grinding marks that can cause arc wandering. For custom lengths, score with a diamond cutoff wheel and snap cleanly. Do not use abrasive cutoff wheels intended for steel—they will load and cause chipping.

Storage, Handling & Racking Guidelines

Store in original sealed tubes or containers in a dry, climate-controlled environment (15–25 °C, < 60% RH). Avoid exposure to moisture, acids, or chlorinated solvents. Do not store near grinding dust or metal filings that can embed in the surface. Handle with clean gloves (cotton or nitrile) to prevent oil transfer from skin. For racking in a welding shop, use dedicated vertical or horizontal racks with individual slots to prevent contact and chipping. Label each slot with diameter and length. Implement FIFO (first-in, first-out) inventory rotation. Shelf life is indefinite if stored properly, but electrodes older than 5 years should be tested for arc starting performance before use.
