Material Overview & Common Uses

316 / 316L is an austenitic stainless steel alloyed with molybdenum (2-3%) for enhanced corrosion resistance, particularly against chlorides and marine environments. The 'L' grade (low carbon, max 0.03% C) minimizes carbide precipitation during welding, making it the preferred choice for welded fabrications. Common Canadian applications include: marine hardware (propeller shafts, railings, cleats), food processing equipment, pharmaceutical vessels, chemical storage tanks, architectural cladding in coastal cities (Vancouver, Halifax), and high-end custom fabrication (boat trailers, outdoor kitchens, brewery equipment). It is non-magnetic in the annealed condition and cannot be hardened by heat treatment.

Machinability, Tooling & Feeds

316/316L is considered a difficult-to-machine material (machinability rating ~36% of 1212 free-machining steel). Use sharp, positive rake carbide inserts (C2 or C3 grade) with chip breakers. Recommended parameters:

Plasma cutting (up to 1 in), fiber laser (up to 3/16 in), and waterjet cutting (up to 2 in) are also common for processing 316/316L plate and sheet.

Storage, Handling & Racking Guidelines

Store indoors in a dry, climate-controlled environment (relative humidity < 60%, temperature 15-25°C). Never store stainless steel directly on concrete floors – use wooden pallets, rubber mats, or plastic dunnage to prevent moisture wicking and chloride contamination.

  • Covering: Keep material covered with breathable plastic sheeting to protect from dust, but allow air circulation to prevent condensation.
  • Separation: Separate 316/316L from carbon steel by at least 12 inches horizontally or use a physical barrier to prevent iron contamination.
  • Sheet/Plate Racking: Use vertical or A-frame racks with padded contact points. Never slide sheets over each other.
  • Bar Stock: Use horizontal cantilever racks with plastic or wood liners. Support bars every 4-6 feet.
  • Tube/Pipe: Store in horizontal racks with saddles, spaced every 5-8 feet. Do not stack more than 3 layers high.
  • Handling: Use clean, dedicated nylon slings or padded clamps. Wear clean cotton or nitrile gloves.
  • Inventory Management: Implement FIFO. Tag each bundle with heat number, thickness, and date received. Set reorder points based on lead time (2-4 weeks).
