It features a high-cellulose sodium coating that produces a deep, penetrating arc with a forceful, digging action. This electrode is specifically designed for welding in all positions, especially vertical-down (stovepipe) techniques used in pipeline and structural fabrication. Common applications include: root passes on API 5L pipe (X42–X70), structural steel erection, shipbuilding, repair welding on galvanized or painted surfaces, and general fabrication where high penetration and fast-freeze slag are required. The electrode operates on DC+ (electrode positive) polarity and is known for its ability to burn through rust, mill scale, and light coatings. It is not recommended for high-strength or low-temperature service without proper preheat and post-weld heat treatment.
