Material Overview & Common Uses
Industrial particleboard core (grades M2 and M3 per CAN/CGSB-11.5 and ANSI A208.1) is a engineered wood panel composed of wood particles (typically softwood shavings and sawmill residuals) bonded with a urea-formaldehyde resin under heat and pressure. It is the standard substrate for laminated cabinet boxes, case goods, shelving, countertop cores, and millwork components in Canadian fabrication shops. M2 grade is used for general interior applications (e.g., drawer sides, vertical panels) where moderate moisture resistance and screw holding are acceptable. M3 grade offers improved internal bond and screw withdrawal resistance, making it suitable for heavy-duty shelving, work surfaces, and components subject to higher mechanical loads. Typical thicknesses range from 3/8" (9.5 mm) to 1-1/8" (28.6 mm), with 3/4" (18 mm) and 5/8" (15.9 mm) being the most common for cabinet construction. Storage, Handling & Racking Guidelines
Store particleboard flat on a level, dry surface (concrete floor with vapor barrier recommended). Stack sheets on 4" x 4" stickers spaced 24" apart, aligned vertically to prevent sag. Maximum stack height: 4 feet (48") to avoid crushing bottom sheets. Keep material in climate-controlled environment (18–24°C, 35–50% RH) for at least 48 hours before machining to equalize moisture. Do not store near exterior doors, HVAC vents, or wet areas. Use a first-in-first-out (FIFO) rotation system. For racking, use A-frame or vertical racks with padded supports to prevent edge damage. Handle sheets with clean gloves to avoid oil transfer. When cutting, support full sheet weight to prevent cracking. For long-term storage (>30 days), wrap in plastic with desiccant packs to prevent moisture uptake. Always inspect incoming shipments for transit damage – reject wet, crushed, or severely warped bundles.
