Material Overview & Common Uses

Marine Grade Plywood is a high-performance engineered wood panel constructed from durable, rot-resistant veneers bonded with waterproof phenolic resin adhesive. The two primary species used in Canadian fabrication are Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and Okoume (Aucoumea klaineana). Douglas Fir offers superior strength and stiffness, making it ideal for structural applications such as boat hulls, dock components, and heavy-duty jigs. Okoume is lighter, more flexible, and prized for its smooth, fine-grain surface, commonly used in canoe building, interior marine joinery, and lightweight furniture. Both must comply with BS 1088 standard, which mandates no voids in the core, a minimum of five plies, and a maximum glue line thickness of 0.5 mm. Typical applications include marine construction, high-end cabinetry, concrete formwork, and precision CNC router projects where dimensional stability and moisture resistance are critical.

Storage, Handling & Racking Guidelines

Store Marine Grade Plywood in a climate-controlled environment (15–25°C, 40–60% RH) to maintain moisture content between 8–12%. Panels must be stored flat on a level, dry surface, elevated at least 100 mm off the concrete floor using wooden dunnage or pallets to prevent moisture wicking. Cover with a breathable tarp or plastic sheeting (ventilated to avoid condensation) if stored outdoors temporarily. Do not store directly on concrete or in areas with high humidity fluctuations. Racking should support the full panel width; use A-frame racks with padded supports to prevent edge damage. For vertical storage, tilt panels at 10–15 degrees and secure with straps to prevent tipping. Handle with clean, dry gloves to avoid oil or dirt contamination. When cutting, support the panel fully to prevent sagging and tear-out. Use a panel cart or vacuum lifter for sheets larger than 4x8. Rotate stock FIFO (first-in, first-out) to avoid age-related moisture loss. Never stack heavy loads on top of marine plywood; maximum stack height: 1.2 m for 18 mm panels.
