Material Overview & Common Uses

Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product manufactured by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibers, combining them with wax and a resin binder, and forming panels under high temperature and pressure. It is characterized by a uniform, dense, and smooth surface with no grain, knots, or voids. Standard MDF is intended for interior use only, while Moisture Resistant (MR) MDF incorporates a specialized resin system (often melamine-urea-formaldehyde or phenolic-based) that significantly reduces water absorption and swelling, making it suitable for high-humidity environments such as kitchens, bathrooms, and commercial millwork.

Common applications include cabinet doors and components, shelving, furniture, speaker enclosures, interior trim, moldings, store fixtures, and CNC-machined decorative panels. In Canadian fabrication shops, MDF is a staple for painted and laminated surfaces due to its excellent edge quality and paint adhesion.

Machinability, Tooling & Feeds

MDF produces a fine, abrasive dust that dulls tooling faster than solid wood or plywood. Use carbide-tipped (CT) or polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tooling for extended life. Dust collection is critical: MDF dust is a respiratory hazard. Use HEPA-rated extraction and PPE (N95 or better).

QC Note: For incoming inspection, verify density by weighing a 100 mm x 100 mm sample. Perform a 24-hour water soak test on a 150 mm x 150 mm sample to confirm thickness swell. Check at least 10% of sheets per bundle, or 100% for critical orders.

Storage, Handling & Racking Guidelines

Store MDF flat on a level, dry surface with full support (no overhang). Maximum stack height is 4 ft (1.2 m) for standard MDF and 3 ft (0.9 m) for MR MDF to prevent bowing. Maintain a climate-controlled environment (18–24°C, 35–50% RH) and acclimate panels for at least 48 hours before machining.

  • MR MDF: Avoid direct contact with concrete floors; use 4x4 runners or plastic skids. Cover stacks with breathable plastic sheeting.
  • Handling: Use clean gloves to prevent oil transfer. Use panel lifters or suction cups for large sheets. Do not slide panels against each other.
  • Racking: For vertical storage of smaller panels, use A-frame racks with padded supports at a 45° angle.
  • Rotation: Label each bundle with date, grade, thickness, and lot number. Implement FIFO (first-in, first-out) rotation. Inspect stored material monthly for moisture or mold.
