Material Overview & Common Uses

Polypropylene (PP) is a semi-crystalline thermoplastic polymer known for its excellent chemical resistance, low moisture absorption, and high fatigue endurance. In Canadian industrial settings, PP sheet is widely used for chemical tanks, fume hoods, plating barrels, food processing equipment, and corrosion-resistant liners. It is also common in custom fabrication for marine components, battery boxes, and laboratory furniture. PP offers good impact resistance down to 0°C but becomes brittle below -20°C, making it suitable for indoor and moderate outdoor use. It is not UV-stable without additives; prolonged sun exposure causes embrittlement and chalking.

Machinability, Tooling & Feeds

PP is soft and gummy, requiring sharp tooling and proper chip evacuation to avoid melting and poor surface finish. Use high-speed steel (HSS) or carbide tools with polished flutes. Below are the recommended parameters for common operations:

Additional Guidelines:

  • Use air blast or mist coolant to prevent melting; avoid flood coolant to prevent thermal shock.
  • Avoid climb milling on thin sections to prevent chatter.
  • PP tends to form long, continuous chips – use chip breakers or manually clear chips.
  • For welding: use hot air or ultrasonic methods. For solvent bonding, use cyclohexane or MEK (bond strength is lower than for PVC or acrylic).
  • For adhesive bonding: use two-part epoxy or cyanoacrylate after surface roughening and cleaning with isopropyl alcohol.
