Post-catalyzed conversion varnish is a two-part, acid-catalyzed coating system that crosslinks upon addition of a liquid catalyst (typically p-toluenesulfonic acid). It provides a hard, chemical-resistant, and durable film superior to pre-catalyzed lacquers or nitrocellulose finishes. Storage, Handling & Racking Guidelines

  • Store unmixed varnish and catalyst in a cool, dry area at 15-25°C.
  • Keep containers tightly sealed to prevent moisture ingress and solvent evaporation.
  • Catalyst is corrosive (contains sulfonic acid); store separately in acid-resistant cabinets with secondary containment.
  • Do not store near heat sources, open flames, or oxidizers.
  • Shelf life of unmixed varnish is 12 months; catalyst shelf life is 6 months.
  • Once mixed, pot life is limited; discard any mixed material beyond pot life – do not add fresh catalyst to extend.
  • Use heavy-duty steel shelving rated for 500 lb per shelf; place pails on spill trays.
  • Ensure area is ventilated per local fire codes (NFPA 33).
  • Keep MSDS/SDS readily available.
  • In case of spill, contain with inert absorbent (e.g., diatomaceous earth) and dispose as hazardous waste per provincial regulations.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE): nitrile gloves, safety glasses, and organic vapor respirator (NIOSH approved) during mixing and application.
