Material Overview & Common Uses

Pure tung oil is a natural, non-toxic drying oil extracted from the seeds of the tung tree (Vernicia fordii). In Canadian woodworking and fabrication shops, it is valued for its deep penetration, water resistance, and matte-to-satin sheen that enhances wood grain without forming a thick surface film. Common applications include: finishing hardwood flooring, butcher blocks, cutting boards, kitchen countertops, wooden utensils, gunstocks, tool handles, boat interiors, and exterior furniture (when properly maintained). It is often used as a standalone finish or as a base for oil/varnish blends. Unlike boiled linseed oil, pure tung oil does not contain metallic driers and cures via oxidation, producing a more durable and water-resistant film. It is compatible with most wood species including maple, oak, walnut, cherry, and exotic hardwoods. In industrial settings, it is applied by wiping, brushing, or dipping, with multiple thin coats preferred over thick applications to avoid tackiness and wrinkling.

Machinability, Tooling & Feeds

Pure tung oil is not machined but applied as a finish. However, its handling and application require specific tooling and techniques in a fabrication environment:
