Scrap Material Disposal or Donation
A comprehensive standard operating procedure for sorting, quantifying, and channeling industrial scrap materials to licensed recyclers or approved charitable organizations while maintaining full audit trail compliance.
To establish a standardized workflow for the disposal or donation of scrap materials generated during warehouse and inventory operations. This SOP ensures regulatory compliance, maximizes potential revenue from recyclable commodities, supports community partnerships through material donations, and minimizes environmental liability.
This procedure applies to all non-hazardous scrap materials originating from warehouse operations, including corrugated cardboard (OCC), plastic stretch wrap, wooden pallets, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and end-of-life electronics. Hazardous waste is governed under a separate SOP.
- Perform lockout/tagout on balers, compactors, and conveyors before clearing jams or performing maintenance.
- Cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A4), safety glasses with side shields, and steel-toed boots are mandatory when handling sorted scrap.
- Use mechanical lift assists for any scrap container exceeding 23 kg. Team lift heavy or awkward items to prevent musculoskeletal injuries.
- Inspect scrap for nails, straps, and sharp edges. Use designated puncture-proof containers for sharp waste.
- Color-coded scrap bins or gaylords (metal, plastic, cardboard, e-waste)
- Certified floor scale (annual calibration sticker visible)
- Pallet jacks / electric forklift
- RFID scanner / tablet with inventory tracking software
- Donation/Disposal manifest forms (digital or paper)
- PPE: Cut-resistant gloves, safety glasses, steel-toed boots
- Baler / Compactor (if applicable)
- Shrink wrap / banding straps for palletized loads
