Material Overview & Common Uses

Soft Maple, primarily from Acer rubrum (Red Maple) and Acer saccharinum (Silver Maple), is a diffuse-porous hardwood widely used in Canadian millwork, furniture, cabinetry, and specialty woodworking. It offers a fine, uniform texture with a light, creamy colour that may have a slight pinkish or greyish cast. Soft Maple is approximately 25% softer than Hard Maple (Acer saccharum) but still provides excellent machinability and dimensional stability. Common applications include: painted or stained cabinet doors, drawer fronts, mouldings, turnings, musical instruments (especially electric guitar bodies and necks), kitchen utensils, and interior trim. It is a cost-effective alternative to Hard Maple where hardness is not critical, and it accepts stains and finishes uniformly.
