Purpose

To establish a standardized procedure for the safe storage and disposal of used oil and oil filters, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, reducing spill risk, and maintaining a clean warehouse environment. Proper handling prevents soil and water contamination and protects personnel from hazardous exposure.

Scope

This SOP applies to all warehouse and maintenance personnel who collect, handle, store, or arrange disposal of used oil and oil filters within the facility. It covers container selection, labeling, temporary storage area requirements, spill prevention, transportation, and documentation for hazardous waste manifests. It does not cover on-site oil analysis or re-refining processes.

Safety Precautions

PPEWear chemical-resistant gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots when handling used oil and filters.
SPILLEnsure spill kits are readily available in the storage area. Immediately contain and clean any spills using absorbent materials; report to supervisor.
VENTStorage area must be well‑ventilated to prevent accumulation of flammable vapours. No smoking or open flames within 15 metres.
FIREDo not store used oil near heat sources or combustible materials. Use approved containers with tight‑fitting lids and proper labelling.

Absorbent materials (spill kits, pads, booms)
Personal protective equipment (PPE) – chemical‑resistant gloves, safety glasses, steel‑toed boots
Hazardous waste labels, tags, and permanent markers
Waste manifest forms (according to local regulations)

Procedure: Step-by-Step

1 Collect used oil and filters from equipment maintenance areas. Drain filters thoroughly for at least 24 hours or until dripping ceases. Place drained filters into a sealed drum or bag.

2 Transfer used oil into designated containers using a funnel to avoid spills. Fill containers to no more than 90% capacity to allow for thermal expansion. Wipe any residue from the exterior.

3 Label each container conspicuously with "Used Oil" and the date of collection. For filters, mark the drum or bag "Used Oil Filters". Ensure all labels comply with local hazardous waste regulations.

4 Move filled containers to the designated hazardous waste storage area. Place on impervious flooring (e.g., sealed concrete) with secondary containment (spill pallet or dike). Keep away from floor drains and ensure area is secure.

5 When a container is full, complete a hazardous waste manifest with required details (waste type, quantity, date, generator information). Schedule pickup by a licensed used oil hauler within 90 days. Retain copies of all manifests for a minimum of 2 years.
