Warehouse Barcode Scanner and Mobile Computer Troubleshooting
A systematic guide to diagnosing and resolving common hardware and software failures affecting barcode scanners and mobile computers in warehouse environments.
To standardize the troubleshooting process for barcode scanners and mobile computers to minimize downtime, reduce operator confusion, and ensure accurate data capture in warehouse operations.
This procedure covers all handheld barcode scanners (including 1D/2D imagers) and mobile computers (Android/Windows) running warehouse management software (WMS) or inventory management systems. It applies to all warehouse associates and maintenance technicians.
- Ensure the mobile computer or scanner is powered off before cleaning or replacing batteries/internal components. Disconnect any charging cables.
- Wear an anti-static wrist strap when handling internal components. Use safety glasses if exposure to dust or debris during cleaning is expected.
- Compressed air duster
- Lint-free microfiber cloth
- Isopropyl alcohol (≥70%)
- Spare batteries (if applicable)
- USB cable for testing connectivity
- Replacement scanner (in case of hardware failure)
- WMS terminal or PC for software diagnostics
