Typical-density estimate. This result uses 750 kg/m³ for MDF. Actual sheet weight varies by manufacturer, product grade, core construction, thickness and moisture content. Use the supplier's published sheet weight or density when an exact shipping or handling weight is required.

Weight starts with panel volume

Sheet weight is the panel's volume multiplied by its density. The arithmetic is straightforward; the estimate depends on using a density that is representative of the material actually being ordered.

Per-sheet weight = length × width × thickness × density
Total order weight = per-sheet weight × quantity

This calculator converts the entered dimensions to metres internally, calculates cubic metres, applies the selected typical density in kg/m³, then returns the result in both kilograms and pounds.

Worked cabinet-shop example

Ten nominal 4 × 8 ft sheets of ¾ in MDF are estimated using a typical MDF density of 750 kg/m³. The result is about 42.5 kg (93.6 lb) per sheet and 424.8 kg (936.4 lb) for the ten-sheet order.

Why the actual sheet can weigh differently
  • GRADEDensity changes between standard, lightweight, moisture-resistant, fire-rated and other panel grades.
  • COREHardwood plywood is especially variable. Veneer-core, MDF-core and particleboard-core panels can have materially different densities.
  • FACEThermofused laminate and decorative surfaces add mass compared with the raw substrate.
  • MOISTUREWood-based panels gain or lose weight as moisture content changes.
  • SIZENominal sheet size and thickness can differ from measured dimensions. For closer estimates, use actual dimensions when available.
Important: Use supplier or manufacturer product data for exact freight, lifting, rack-loading or equipment-limit decisions. This calculator is an estimating tool built around typical densities, not a certified weight statement.
Density assumptions used here

The defaults are deliberately visible instead of hidden inside the calculation. They are representative values drawn from current manufacturer product declarations and rounded where a broader material category needs one working estimate.

  • MDF750 kg/m³. Uniboard's current EPD lists regular MDF at 750 kg/m³.
  • PB650 kg/m³. Uniboard reports 650 kg/m³ average density for its particleboard panels.
  • TFL670 kg/m³. Uniboard reports 670 kg/m³ average density for thermofused laminated particleboard.
  • SWPLY500 kg/m³. Rounded working value based on Roseburg's current softwood-plywood EPD at 484 kg/m³ dry density.
  • HW/BIRCH650 kg/m³. A combined working estimate between Roseburg's 578 kg/m³ hardwood-plywood average and Metsä Wood's 680 kg/m³ birch-plywood average.
Method & sources

Typical densities from current manufacturer product data. The calculator shows the assumption because a generic material name is not an exact product specification.

  1. Uniboard — MDF and Thermofused Laminated MDF Environmental Product Declaration. Lists regular MDF at 750 kg/m³ and shows how density changes across MDF grades and laminated variants.
  2. Uniboard — Particleboard and Thermofused Laminated Panels Environmental Product Declaration. Reports average density of 650 kg/m³ for particleboard and 670 kg/m³ for TFL particleboard panels.
  3. Roseburg Forest Products — Softwood Plywood Environmental Product Declaration. Reports a production-weighted dry density of 484 kg/m³; Ryxen rounds this to 500 kg/m³ for the calculator's broad softwood-plywood default.
  4. Roseburg Forest Products — Hardwood Plywood Environmental Product Declaration. Reports 578 kg/m³ average dry density and shows substantial variation by veneer, MDF, particleboard and combination cores.
  5. Metsä Wood — Birch Plywood Product Data. Lists an average birch-plywood density of 680 kg/m³ at 65% relative humidity, useful context for the upper end of the combined hardwood/Baltic-birch selector.

Common sheet-weight questions

How is sheet weight calculated?

Multiply sheet length by width and thickness to get volume, then multiply by material density. The calculator converts dimensions to metres internally, uses density in kg/m³, and multiplies the per-sheet weight by quantity.

Why is the result only an estimate?

The selected density is a typical working value, not the specification for every product sold under that material name. Manufacturer, grade, core construction, thickness tolerance and moisture content can all change actual sheet weight.

Does melamine-faced particleboard weigh more than raw particleboard?

Typically, yes. Uniboard's current environmental product data reports 650 kg/m³ average density for particleboard and 670 kg/m³ for thermofused laminated particleboard. Exact products still vary.

Can I use this result for shipping, lifting or rack limits?

Use it as an estimate. Where exact mass affects freight, lifting equipment, rack loading or another operating limit, use the supplier or manufacturer's published weight or density for the exact panel being handled.
