Partial Discharge

Partial discharge (PD) is a localized electrical breakdown in a small insulation region when the electric field exceeds the dielectric strength of a void, air gap, contamination, or defect. In rotating machines, it appears as small sparks around stator winding insulation and is a leading indicator of insulation deterioration and machine failure.

Industrial Context & Application

In a working machine shop, partial discharge testing rarely gets attention until a spindle drive motor or coolant pump fails unexpectedly. But for high-voltage rotating equipment driving CNC cells, millwork lines, compressors, and dust collectors, PD testing is a predictive maintenance tool. With the machine off line, an external high-voltage source energizes the stator, and technicians record phase-resolved PD patterns for 30–60 seconds per voltage step to commission new windings or verify overhaul work. Online monitoring runs while production continues, catching void formation, surface tracking, vibration damage, contamination, and thermal aging under real operating conditions. The practical value is not processing metal; it is spotting insulation deterioration early enough to schedule winding repair before a forced outage stops the line. Sensor placement and noise management matter, and baseline data must be trended over time to distinguish normal aging from a fault that is accelerating toward failure.

Common Pitfalls & Failures
  • ⚠️Ignoring electrical noise: Nearby switching gear and poor sensor spacing mask PD signals, producing false alarms or missed defects that lead to unnecessary maintenance or undetected insulation damage.
  • ⚠️Pass/fail mentality: A single PD snapshot cannot reveal deterioration; without baselines and trending, rising defect activity stays hidden until insulation damage has become severe and costly.
  • ⚠️Terminology mix-up: Confusing partial discharge with electrical discharge machining leads technicians to chase the wrong fault and expand maintenance scope while the real insulation issue goes unaddressed.
Technical FAQs
What physical condition causes partial discharge in stator insulation?

A local region where the insulation has lower dielectric strength than the surrounding material—commonly an air void, delamination, contamination, surface defect, or mechanical degradation. When the electric field exceeds that weak point, a small spark or breakdown occurs.

Why is partial discharge dangerous if each event is small?

Repeated discharges erode the insulation, accelerate treeing and surface tracking, and progressively reduce dielectric integrity. Over time, the damage compounds until the winding insulation can no longer withstand operating voltage, causing a forced failure.

How is partial discharge measured in practice?

PD is typically quantified in pico-coulombs to assess severity and captured using either offline or online systems. Offline testing energizes the machine from an external source while it is out of service; online monitoring collects data under real operating conditions with the machine energized.
