Purpose

To provide a standardized, repeatable method for safely mounting abrasive wheels on pedestal, bench, and hand-held grinders, and for performing the ring test to detect hidden cracks that could lead to wheel disintegration at speed. This procedure protects operators and bystanders from serious injury.

Scope

This SOP applies to all abrasive wheels 6" (150 mm) in diameter and larger that require mechanical mounting and speed verification. It covers new wheels as well as wheels that have been stored or removed from a machine. Excluded: diamond blades, wire brushes, and wheels smaller than 6" that are used at speeds below 3,000 RPM.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout the grinder before handling the spindle or flanges. Verify zero energy state.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, face shield, hearing protection, and cut-resistant gloves. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry.
  • INSPNever mount a wheel that is damaged, expired, or does not match the grinder's RPM rating. Discard wheels with visual cracks.
  • RINGAlways perform the ring test before reusing a wheel that has been removed. A dull thud indicates a crack — reject the wheel.
  • RUNAfter mounting, run the wheel at operating speed for at least one minute while standing clear of the plane of rotation.

  • Non-metallic hammer or mallet (for ring test)
  • Blotters (paper spacers) if required by wheel manufacturer

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Inspect the wheel visually. Examine both faces and the arbor hole for cracks, chips, or damage. Reject any wheel with visible defects.
2 Check spindle and flanges. Clean the spindle threads with a wire brush. Verify that both flanges are clean, flat, and have recessed faces (if applicable). The flange diameter must be at least 1/3 of the wheel diameter.
3 Place blotters. If required by the manufacturer, place a blotter between each flange and the wheel. Ensure blotters are larger than the flange diameter.
4 Mount the wheel. Slide the wheel onto the spindle. Position the wheel against the inner flange, then install the outer flange and hand-tighten the nut. Use the wrench to tighten firmly — do not overtighten (follow torque spec if available).
5 Perform the ring test. Suspend the mounted wheel on a clean finger or dowel through the arbor hole. Tap the wheel gently with a non-metallic hammer at four points evenly spaced around the periphery. Listen for a clear, metallic ring. If any tap produces a dull thud or rattle, the wheel is cracked and must be discarded.
6 Run the wheel at reduced speed. Stand to the side of the wheel's plane of rotation. Start the grinder and let it run at operating speed for at least one minute. Observe for excessive vibration, wobble, or unusual noise. If any issue arises, shut down and remount or replace the wheel.
7 Final verification. After a successful test run, the wheel is ready for normal use. Record the mounting and ring test in the daily pre-shift log per your company's safety program.
