Propane Cylinder Storage
Propane cylinder storage is the regulated outdoor storage, segregation, securing, and protection of portable propane cylinders in accordance with codes such as CSA B149.2 – Propane Storage and Handling Code, provincial fuel safety directives, and compressed gas cylinder rules, to prevent fire, explosion, impact damage, tampering, and non-compliance. Cylinders must be stored upright, secured, and not exposed to temperatures exceeding 125°F or ignition sources.
On a manufacturing or shop floor, propane cylinder storage involves a designated outdoor fenced or caged area on solid, non-combustible ground, away from buildings, property lines, and air intakes. Cylinders are stored upright, secured with non-conductive chains or racks, and segregated by gas type. Full and empty cylinders are separated and clearly tagged. The area is well-ventilated, protected from heat sources, and posted with NO SMOKING signs. Access is limited to trained personnel, and cylinders are moved using carts to prevent damage. This setup integrates into daily operations with documented procedures for receiving, issuing, and returning cylinders, ensuring compliance with CSA B149.2 and provincial regulations.
Are we ever allowed to store propane cylinders indoors in a manufacturing facility?
By default, no. CSA B149.2 specifies that a cylinder containing propane liquid or vapour shall not be stored or used inside any structure, and a cylinder not connected for use shall be stored outdoors. Indoor use may occur only when cylinders are connected for use and the installation meets CSA B149.2, building, fire, and mechanical code criteria, but this is not considered storage. Any unconnected cylinders indoors should be flagged as potential non-compliance.
What clearances and separations must we maintain between stored propane cylinders and other hazards?
For cylinders in storage, CSA-based guidance includes at least 3 ft (1 m) from other flammable compressed gas containers, and at least 20 ft (6 m) from containers or dispensers for flammable/combustible liquids, oxidizing, corrosive, or toxic gas containers. Outdoor storage areas must be protected from vehicular traffic or shielded by barriers, and at prescribed distances (e.g., 25 ft / 7.5 m) from buildings, property lines, and points of assembly, away from openings or air intakes at or below the relief valve discharge level.
How should we configure our outdoor cylinder storage area to satisfy both CSA and general compressed gas requirements?
A compliant configuration includes a raised concrete pad or non-combustible platform, cylinders upright with valves closed and protective caps, secured with non-conductive chains or racks. Separate sections for full and empty propane cylinders with clear tagging, segregation from oxygen and other gases using code-specified distances, and environmental controls like ventilation, shade to maintain temperature below 125°F, and no ignition sources. Security includes fencing or caging, locked when unattended, and protection from vehicle traffic via bollards or barriers.
