Quick Exhaust Valve
A Quick Exhaust Valve (QEV) is a specialized three-port pneumatic valve that rapidly vents pressurized air from an actuator directly to the atmosphere, bypassing the control valve and long piping to minimize cylinder retraction time. It is installed directly on the cylinder's air port to enable faster piston return by instantly dumping air when inlet pressure drops.
In shop floor maintenance, Quick Exhaust Valves are installed directly on cylinder air ports to accelerate piston retraction in pneumatic systems. When supply air flows from the control valve to the cylinder, the QEV seals its exhaust port; upon pressure drop at the inlet, an internal poppet shifts to seal the supply and open the exhaust, dumping air instantly to atmosphere. This bypasses long piping and control valves, reducing cycle times in applications like clamping, indexing, or material handling. Proper mounting is critical to maximize speed benefits, as restrictive exhaust paths or incorrect placement negate the valve's advantage. QEVs are also used in safety instrumented systems up to SIL 2 (or SIL 3 with hardware fault tolerance), but they cannot achieve zero leakage per manufacturer specifications.
Why must a QEV be mounted directly on the cylinder?
Mounting directly minimizes the exhaust path distance to atmosphere, ensuring the piston retracts quickly without the delay of air traveling back through long lines to the control valve.
Can a QEV achieve zero leakage?
No; manufacturer specifications allow a certain amount of leakage, and the valve cannot be used specifically to achieve zero-leakage standards.
What is the safety rating for QEVs in instrumented systems?
QEVs are suitable for Safety Instrumented Systems up to SIL 2 (low demand mode); with hardware fault tolerance HFT = 1, they may be used up to SIL 3.
