Purpose

The purpose of this SOP is to standardize the periodic testing of dust collector fire suppression systems — including clean agent, water mist, or dry chemical types. Proper testing verifies that detection devices, control panels, agent storage pressure, and release mechanisms function correctly, minimising the risk of undetected failures that could lead to catastrophic fire or explosion.

Scope

This procedure applies to all dust collectors in the facility that are equipped with an engineered fire suppression system requiring routine functional testing. It covers lockout/tagout, visual inspection, control panel diagnostics, pressure verification, manual release testing, and system reset. This SOP does not cover factory acceptance testing, full-scale discharge tests, or installation of new systems.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOComplete lockout/tagout of the dust collector and any connected material handling systems before beginning work. Verify zero energy using a phase tester.
  • PPEWear safety glasses, cut-resistant gloves, and arc‑rated clothing when working near electrical enclosures and pressurised agent containers.
  • HZRDPressurised agent containers can discharge with significant force. Never stand directly in front of a container valve when actuating. Use remote lanyards where provided.
  • LOTOIsolate and depressurise the suppression system before opening any piping or removing pressure gauges. Residual agent can cause injury.

  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) as listed above

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout the Dust Collector — Apply LOTO to the main disconnect and any auxiliary power. Verify zero energy with a non‑contact phase tester on all incoming power leads.
2 Isolate and Depressurise the Suppression System — Close isolation valves on all agent supply lines. Manually actuate the main storage container dump valve (using remote lanyard if available) to vent residual pressure. Confirm 0 psi on all system gauges.
3 Visual Inspection of All Components — Examine agent storage containers, piping, nozzles, and detection tubing for corrosion, mechanical damage, or obstructions. Verify mounting brackets are secure and that nozzles are not blocked by dust accumulation.
4 Check Control Panel and Detection Devices — Open the suppression control panel. Inspect all wiring terminals for tightness and corrosion. Test every detection device (heat, IR, or spark detection) using the manufacturer's test magnet or simulated signal. Verify that each device triggers a panel alarm.
5 Pressure Gauge Verification — Attach a calibrated pressure gauge to the test port on the main agent container. Compare reading to the manufacturer's marked pressure gauge. If the reading is outside ±10 % of rated pressure, replace the container and schedule a recharge.
6 Manual Release Test (Simulated) — Clear all personnel from the hazard zone. Remotely actuate the manual release (if present) and confirm: alarm sounds, equipment shutdown is initiated (observed via status indicators), and agent flow is indicated (pressure drop on gauges or flow indicator). Do not discharge agent – ensure system is depressurised or use a test gas.
7 Reset and Restore System — Follow manufacturer reset procedure: reset control panel alarms, replace shear pins or seals, recharge the system to rated pressure, re‑open all isolation valves. Remove LOTO from the dust collector.
8 Functional Verification Under Normal Operation — Re‑energize the dust collector and run it for one complete production cycle. Confirm automatic detection and shutdown functions operate normally by temporarily simulating a fault (with management approval). Record all readings and observations in the inspection log.
