Purpose

The purpose of this standard operating procedure is to define the exact steps required to adjust the work rest, belt guard, and disc guard on a combination belt and disc sander. Correct adjustment ensures that the work rest gap does not exceed 1.6 mm (1/16 in), that guards cover all exposed abrasive surfaces on the upward-running side, and that the machine meets WorkSafeBC OHS requirements for abrasive machinery guarding. Following this procedure reduces the risk of kickback, pinch-point injuries, and abrasive failure.

Scope

This SOP applies to all stationary combination belt and disc sanders used in woodworking, metalworking, and composite fabrication shops under Ryxen operational control. It covers the disc sander work rest, the belt sander work rest, the disc guard, and the belt guard. It does not cover portable sanders, dedicated wide-belt sanders, or spindle sanders. All operators, maintenance technicians, and safety officers who work with or supervise the use of combination sanders must be familiar with this procedure.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout/Tagout: Complete LOTO before accessing any guard or rest adjustment hardware. Verify the machine is isolated from all energy sources. Tag the disconnect with your personal lock and tag.
  • PPEPersonal Protective Equipment: Wear safety glasses with side shields, hearing protection, and cut-resistant gloves when handling abrasive belts and discs. Do not wear loose-fitting clothing or jewellery near the machine.
  • BURNHot Surfaces: Abrasive belts and discs can become hot during use. Allow the machine to cool for at least 2 minutes after running before touching the abrasive surface or adjacent metal components.
  • PINCHPinch Points: Keep hands and tools clear of the abrasive belt/disc path and the adjustment mechanisms during the procedure. Use a flashlight and feeler gauges instead of fingers to verify gaps.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Combination belt and disc sander (any brand — ensure machine-specific manual is available)
  • Combination wrench set (metric/imperial, typically 10 mm, 13 mm, 3/8 in, 1/2 in)
  • Feeler gauge set (0.05 mm to 1.5 mm range; 1.6 mm / 1/16 in critical)
  • Machinist's square (50 mm / 2 in blade length minimum)
  • Hex key set (metric, 3 mm to 8 mm)
  • Flashlight or high-lumen shop light
  • Lockout/tagout kit (personal lock, hasp, tag)
  • Replacement sanding belt and disc (correct grit for the task — typically 80 to 120 grit for general use)
  • Clean rag and isopropyl alcohol (for cleaning the platen and disc surface)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Lockout/Tagout and Visual Inspection. Apply LOTO to the sander following your facility's energy control procedure. Remove the plug from the receptacle or lock the disconnect switch. Tag with your personal lock and tag. Inspect the sanding belt and disc for wear, cracks, tears, or loading. Check that dust collection ports are clear and the platen is free of debris. If the belt or disc is worn beyond service limits (e.g., exposed backing, missing grit), replace it before proceeding. Clean the platen and disc surface with isopropyl alcohol and a clean rag.
2 Adjust the Work Rest Gap — Disc Side. Locate the two or three locking bolts that secure the work rest to the disc-side table or bracket. Loosen them with the appropriate combination wrench — do not remove them. Insert a feeler gauge between the leading edge of the work rest and the disc abrasive surface. Set the gap to 1.6 mm (1/16 in). Tighten the bolts progressively in a star pattern to avoid distorting the rest. Re-check the gap at three positions across the disc face (left, centre, right). The gap must be uniform within ±0.25 mm at all points.
3 Adjust the Work Rest Gap — Belt Side. Loosen the belt-side work rest mounting bolts (typically two or four hex-head bolts accessible from the side or underneath). Using the feeler gauge, set the gap between the rest edge and the abrasive belt to 1.6 mm (1/16 in). Ensure that the rest is parallel to the belt travel path — use the machinist's square against the rest face and the belt platen to verify squareness. Tighten the bolts evenly and re-check the gap at the top, middle, and bottom of the belt contact area. The belt must not contact the rest when the machine is running.
4 Check Disc Guard Position and Clearance. The disc guard must cover the abrasive disc from the 12 o'clock position to the 6 o'clock position on the upward-running (exposed) side of the disc. If the guard is loose or misaligned, loosen the guard bracket bolts (hex key or wrench). Slide the guard into position so that it is concentric with the disc and maintains a clearance of 3 mm to 5 mm from the abrasive surface. Tighten the bracket bolts. Rotate the disc by hand to verify that the guard does not contact the abrasive at any point in the rotation.
5 Check Belt Guard Tracking and Alignment. The belt guard must fully cover the contact drum and the idler pulley on the side opposite the operator. Inspect the guard hinges and mounting brackets for damage or deformation. Loosen the guard positioning bolts and adjust the guard so that it sits within 3 mm of the belt surface without touching it. The guard must not interfere with belt tracking. Re-tighten all fasteners. Remove LOTO and momentarily jog the machine (momentary start/stop) to confirm that the belt tracks properly and does not rub the guard. If the belt drifts, adjust tracking per the machine manual before finalizing guard position.
6 Final Verification and Sign-Off. With the machine running at operating speed (typically 1725–3450 RPM for the disc, variable for the belt), listen for rubbing, scraping, or unusual noise from either side. Verify that all fasteners are torqued and that the work rest remains square to the disc and belt. Check that the gap remains within spec at all measurement points. Log the adjustment in the daily inspection record or digital compliance log (SafeDesk). If any component cannot be adjusted to meet the required tolerances, tag the machine as unsafe and notify maintenance. Do not operate until repairs are made.
