Purpose

To define the procedure for conducting a monthly visual inspection and tagging of fire extinguishers to ensure compliance with safety regulations and operational readiness. This SOP ensures that every extinguisher is in its designated location, fully charged, free of damage, and ready for immediate use in an emergency.

Scope

This SOP applies to all portable fire extinguishers across the facility, including production floors, warehouses, maintenance shops, office areas, and outdoor storage yards. It covers ABC, CO₂, and Class K extinguishers. Monthly visual inspections do not replace the annual maintenance and hydrostatic testing required by the manufacturer and regulatory codes.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTONot applicable for this visual inspection; however, ensure the area around the extinguisher is clear of hazards. Do not approach an extinguisher that shows signs of leakage or rupture — tag the area and notify a supervisor.
  • PPEWear safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves when handling extinguishers. Use a flashlight to inspect hard‑to‑see areas. Avoid contact with the safety pin and tamper seal during inspection (do not break the seal).
Required Tools & Materials
  • Monthly inspection tags (wire ties or adhesive, pre‑dated for the month)
  • Safety glasses and cut‑resistant gloves
  • Flashlight (for checking pressure gauge and obscured areas)
  • Digital camera or smartphone for photo documentation (if required by your compliance system)
  • Fire extinguisher logbook or digital compliance app (e.g., SafeDesk)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Locate and Assess Access – Navigate to each extinguisher station. Confirm the extinguisher is mounted on its bracket and that the path to it is unobstructed (no storage, equipment, or debris within 1 m). Record any access issues for immediate correction.
2 Verify Pressure Gauge – Visually inspect the gauge needle. It must rest in the green zone. If the needle is in the red “overcharged” or “undercharged” section, tag the extinguisher as “unserviceable” and schedule a recharge or replacement.
3 Inspect for Physical Damage – Run your flashlight over the cylinder, valve, hose, and nozzle. Look for dents, corrosion, leaks, cracks, or signs of previous discharge. If any damage is found, remove the unit and replace it with a serviceable extinguisher.
4 Check Safety Pin and Tamper Seal – Ensure the safety pin is still in place and the tamper seal (plastic or lead) is unbroken. A missing or broken seal indicates potential tampering – flag the extinguisher for maintenance review.
5 Verify Operating Instructions and Labels – The instruction label must be legible and firmly attached. If the label is faded, torn, or missing, replace the extinguisher immediately. Also confirm that the correct extinguisher class (A, B, C, or K) matches the hazard in the area.
6 Affix Inspection Tag and Log – If the extinguisher passes all checks, attach a new monthly inspection tag (remove the previous month’s tag). The tag must show the month and year of inspection. Update the fire extinguisher logbook or digital system (e.g., SafeDesk) with the inspection date, inspector name, and any remarks.
