Purpose

To establish a standardized method for training all shift personnel in the safe and effective use of portable fire extinguishers. This SOP ensures that every employee understands fire classes, the PASS technique, extinguisher limitations, and the proper documentation required for regulatory compliance. A complete training record serves as immediate proof of due diligence during a WorkSafeBC inspection.

Scope

Applies to all employees, supervisors, and contractors working in production, maintenance, warehouse, and office areas where portable extinguishers are mounted. Covers initial training for new hires, annual refresher training, and any re‑training required after a near‑miss or extinguisher discharge event. Does not replace monthly visual inspection of extinguishers (see SOP Fire Extinguisher Monthly Inspection) or full hydrostatic testing procedures.

Safety Precautions
  • LOTOLockout any live electrical training props (if used). Ensure the training area is free of combustible materials and that a second operator stands by with a backup extinguisher.
  • PPEAll trainees and instructors must wear safety glasses with side shields, cut‑resistant gloves, and steel‑toed boots. Long sleeves and pants are mandatory. Hearing protection if using a live discharge (CO₂ or dry chemical).
  • VentPerform live discharges only in a well‑ventilated outdoor area or in a bay with active industrial exhaust. Dry chemical powder is an irritant; avoid breathing the cloud.
  • EscapeEnsure all trainees maintain a clear exit path. Never turn your back on a fire. If the fire grows beyond a waste‑basket size, evacuate immediately and call 911.
Required Tools & Materials
  • Portable fire extinguisher (ABC dry chemical, CO₂, or water‑based – appropriate for the training environment)
  • Training fire simulator pan (or UL‑approved live fire training device)
  • Safety glasses, cut‑resistant gloves, steel‑toed boots, long sleeves
  • Digital or paper “Fire Extinguisher Training Log” sheet (one per trainee)
  • Pen (waterproof ink) or tablet with SafeDesk app
  • Spare safety pins and tamper seals (if re‑arming training units)
  • Backup extinguisher for instructor (in case of uncontrolled fire)

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Pre‑training inspection. Verify the training extinguisher is fully charged (gauge in green), the safety pin is intact, and the nozzle is clear. Confirm the annual inspection tag is current. Record extinguisher ID, type, and expiry date on the training log.
2 Classroom briefing (10 min). Explain the three fire classes (A, B, C) and the corresponding extinguisher markings. Emphasise the colour code: blue for dry chemical, black for CO₂, white for water. Describe the P.A.S.S. acronym – Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep. Demonstrate each action using the actual extinguisher without discharging.
3 Live or simulated discharge (per trainee). Have the trainee approach the training fire from a safe distance (8–10 ft). Instruct them to pull the pin, aim at the base, squeeze the handle fully, and sweep side to side until the fire is out. Coach on re‑aiming if the fire re‑ignites. Each trainee must complete one full discharge.
4 Post‑discharge inspection. After use, check the extinguisher pressure gauge – if in the red, tag for recharge. Re‑install a new safety pin and tamper seal if the unit is to be returned to service. Document the discharge and any recharge needed.
5 Complete the training record. Fill in: trainee name, employee ID, date, extinguisher ID, instructor initials, pass/fail status, and next training due date (12 months). Scan or upload the completed log into your digital compliance system (SafeDesk recommended). File the physical copy in the training binder. Obtain trainee signature acknowledging understanding.
6 Remediation if failed. If a trainee cannot demonstrate the P.A.S.S. technique after two attempts, schedule one‑on‑one remedial training within 7 days. Document the reason for failure and the re‑training date. Do not sign off until the trainee demonstrates proficiency.
