Forklift Battery Room Ventilation And Spill Kit Inspection

A daily 10‑minute inspection protocol to verify the ventilation system is removing hydrogen gas and to confirm that the battery spill containment kit is fully stocked and within expiry. This SOP applies to all lead‑acid battery charging stations in the warehouse.

Purpose

The primary purpose of this inspection is to prevent hydrogen gas accumulation (explosion hazard) and to ensure that any electrolyte spill can be immediately neutralized and contained. A properly maintained ventilation system keeps hydrogen levels below 1% LEL, and a stocked spill kit allows a single operator to safely manage a battery acid release without escalation.

Scope

This procedure covers all indoor battery charging rooms with lead‑acid batteries (forklifts, pallet jacks, scrubbers). It does not apply to lithium‑ion systems (which have different ventilation requirements) or to outdoor charging stations with natural cross‑ventilation. The inspection is performed once per shift by the designated operator or maintenance technician.

Safety Precautions
  • HYDRHydrogen gas is explosive above 4% concentration. The ventilation system must be running actively during any battery charging. Never block or obstruct the exhaust grilles.
  • ACIDElectrolyte contains sulfuric acid. Always wear rubber gloves, safety glasses with side shields, a face shield, and an acid‑resistant apron when handling batteries or approaching the spill kit.
  • LOTOBefore inspecting the vent fan motor or louvers, perform Lockout/Tagout on the ventilation electrical supply. Live electrical inspection is prohibited.
  • PPENo smoking, open flames, or spark‑producing tools within 8 m of charging area. Use only non‑sparking tools if any adjustment is needed.

  • Anemometer or velometer (airflow measurement, ±0.1 m/s accuracy)
  • Battery spill kit (commercial, containing neutralizer, absorbent pads, disposal bags, gloves, and instructions)
  • pH test strips (range 0–14)
  • 1 kg bag of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) — refill neutralizer if below half

Procedure: Step-by-Step
1 Don PPE and approach charging room – Put on rubber gloves, safety glasses, face shield, and acid‑resistant apron. Ensure the “CHARGING – NO FLAMES” sign is posted. Enter only after ventilation fan is audible.
2 Verify ventilation airflow – Place the anemometer 50 mm from the exhaust grille. Reading must be ≥ 0.5 m/s. If below threshold, check for blockages and clean the grille. If still low, tag the fan system and do not commence charging until repaired.
3 Inspect the battery spill kit – Locate the spill kit at the designated station. Check that the seal is intact, the kit has not expired (date printed on label), and all items are present: absorbent pads (minimum 10), neutralizer granules (≥ 1 kg), disposable gloves, and chemical disposal bags.
4 Test the neutralizer – Open the neutralizer container. Using a pH test strip, verify the baking soda is still active (pH 8–9 when moist). If pH is neutral or acidic, replace the container. Close and reseal all containers.
5 Examine charging cables and plugs – Visually inspect each charging cable for cracked insulation, exposed copper, or corrosion at the plug contact points. Any damaged cable must be removed from service and tagged for repair.
6 Record findings in logbook / SafeDesk – Enter the date, time, airflow reading, spill kit condition (pass/fail), and any corrective actions taken. If using SafeDesk, snap a photo of the kit and gauge. Flag any non‑conformances for the safety coordinator.
